The reliability of the Browning® BPS® Hunter Pump-Action Shotgun starts with rigid, dual machined, steel slide bars, housed inside a receiver machined from a solid block of forged steel. The double slide bars eliminate twisting and binding for faster, more efficient operation. The BPS ejects spent cases out the bottom of the receiver so there is no ejection port on either side where a drenching rain can drip into the action, and the bottom ejection and top mounted tang safety make the BPS pump shotgun truly ambidextrous. The BPS Hunter comes with a satin finished, black walnut stock, and a high polished blued barrel and receiver. A chrome-plated chamber cycles all types of shotgun ammo, making the BPS Hunter a superb all-round shotgun well suited for hunting nearly any species of game. A magazine cutoff eases loading and unloading when you need to change shotshells rapidly when encountering different species of game. A vent rib allows you to point naturally and swing smoothly, and the silver front bead picks up easily in subdued light. The BPS Hunter Pump-Action Shotgun utilizes interchangeable Invector-Plus choke tubes, and a back-bored barrel to deliver dense, uniform shot patterns that down targets at maximum shotgun range. Includes 3 choke tubes.

great pump shotgun This is a well built shotgun that I have never had any issues with. Used it for turkey, waterfowl, upland birds, and sporting clays. The bottom eject is also nice since I am left handed and my son is right handed. We can both use it and neither of us has to worry about ejecting shells flying in front of our face. August 18, 2010

S - R lever?

Details:
I have an older model (at least 20 years old) BPS 12 guage. There is a lever just at the back base of the pump handle I can't figure out it's purpose. It has 2 letters (positions): "S" & "R".

The lever flips to either of those positions, but I can't seem to find any info online regarding what it's purpose is. I was given this gun as a child and never really bothered with that lever until now.

What does this lever do?

A:
That's the magazine cut-off. It allows you to eject a shell without feeding another from the magazine. You can then manually load a single shell. For instance, if your magazine is loaded for duck hunting and you see an opportune goose, you can change to a different load for a single shot without having to cycle through your entire magazine to load different shot.

I don't own a BPS but after looking at a parts diagram I will venture a guess at "Slide Release". Hopefully this helps.
