  • Durable, high-impact nylon composite construction
  • Tapered wings on each side for structural reinforcement and lift
  • Sacrificial node on the bottom limits engine's skeg from plowing into underwater objects
Designed to protect and perform, the Blackfin Replacement Skeg is made from durable high-impact nylon composite featuring two tapered wings on each side for structural reinforcement and lift at every angle of engine trim. The Blackfin also features a sacrificial node on the bottom which limits the engine's skeg from plowing into underwater objects, and is shaped to turn the engine slightly on side impacts for more prop protection.
To determine the Blackfin model for your engine, measure from the front of the prop to the tip of the gear housing. Simply match this measurement to one of the Blackfin sizes listed below.
Note: The MerCruiser Alpha One when measured falls into the medium category, however it will require a small Blackfin.
Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by blackfin skeg The blackfin skeg cover works great basspro shop should also carry the medium size at this time you do not the directions were easy to follow and the item works great if you fully follow the installation instructions. March 14, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by Wasn't what I expected The Black fin sure looks good... but.. doesn't fit well and the glue that it comes with doesn't adhere well. (and yes.. I read the directions..you need to get the skeg REALLY clean) I ended up re-gluing it (using a 3M adhesive) and thru-screwing it with stainless screws. January 27, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product Used on my Mercury 115 with broken skeg. Looks good and improved steering. No change in top speed. Prep properly and it will stay on. October 3, 2010
Rated 5 out of 5 by GREAT INVESTMENT I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT FOR ANYONE WHO FISHES BASS TOURNAMENTS, BUT IT IS ALSO GOOD FOR RECREATIONAL BOAT USE. WHEN YOU ARE ON A DIFFERENT LAKE OR RIVER EVERY WEEKEND, IT'S GOOD TO HAVE EXTRA PROTECTION FOR YOUR OUTBOARD. IT IS A LITTLE BIT LONGER THAN THE SKEG ON YOUR OUTBOARD, SO IT SHIELDS YOUR PROP BETTER. THIS PRODUCT IS TOUGH AND DURABLE. IT ALSO KEEPS YOUR SKEG LOOKING NICE, INSTEAD OF SCRATCHED AND CHIPPED. I WON'T DRIVE MY BOAT WITHOUT IT. July 20, 2010

Measuring for Fit
To determine the Blackfin model you need, measure from the front of the prop to the tip of the gear housing. Take your horiziontal measurement and match it to the one of the three Blackfin sizes. The Mercruiser Alpha One when measured falls into the medium category; however it will require a Small Blackfin.

Blackfin Small
10.5" to 12.5"

Blackfin Medium
13.5" or 14.5"

Blackfin Large
15.5"

They do not list one to fit a size 17". Thanks

You will need to use 2 Blackfins with dual motors. The steering will be much more sensitive and the boat will jump out of the hole with the Blackfins installed. The horizontal ribs cause you to need less trim to get the bow to the same point instead of just the thrust off the prop. You will love the increase sensitivity in steering while protecting the lower unit and prop.

THEY HAVE GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IF YOU WISH TO CALL THEM WITH ANY QUESTIONS (BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR PURCHASE). THE BLACKFIN COMES WITH FULL INSTRUCTIONS. PLUS, BLACKFIN HAS A STEP BY STEP ISTALLATION SLIDE SHOW ON THERE WEB SITE. THE PRODUCT COMES WITH THE SEALANT THAT YOU NEED TO INSTALL IT. JUST ROUGH UP THE SURFACE OF YOUR SKEG WITH SOME SANDPAPER. FILE DOWN ANY ROUGH EDGES OR GOUGES. APPLY THE SEALANT TO THE SKEG AS DIRECTED. PUT THE BLACKFIN ON. RUN A BEAD OF SEALANT ALONG THE EDGES WHERE THE BLACKFIN MEETS THE LOWER UNIT AND SMOOTH IT OUT. WIPE OFF THE EXCESS THAT OOZES OUT OF A COUPLE OF SMALL HOLES ON THE SIDES. TAPE IT IN PLACE WHILE THE SEALANT CURES. AND THAT IS PRETTY MUCH IT.

Marine adhesive included in package. Follow instructions and clean and scuff inside of Blackfin thoroughly as well as skeg. Allow plenty of time for adhesive to harden (a week would be about right).

A flexible urethane adhesive bonds the Blackfin to the lower unit and absorbs the impact throughout the lower gearcase instead of just the point of impact.

The Blackfin slides over the existing skeg and is attached with a flexible marine adhesive that absorbs the impact before it reaches your lower unit. Anything else is just a cover.

This is attached to your existing skeg with a strong adhesive. However, my Blackfin fell off after a short time and I replaced it with a much better product. Picture attached...
