Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap® Series is the number 1 selling hardbait in the world for over 25 years, and there's a very good reason for the Rat-L-Trap's overwhelming popularity. The Rat-L-Trap just flat-out catches fish! Whether your quarry is active or neutral doesn't matter; in addition to the flashing, shimmering shad-like profile and super-tight wiggle, every Rat-L-Trap is calibrated to emit Liv-N-Sound—producing lifelike vibrations that replicate those of distressed baitfish... and predator fish just can't resist. They've had more than a quarter-century to catch up, but no other hardbait can boast the fish-catching success of the Rat-L-Trap. Built right, with premium split rings and a tough Durashell™ finish. Every tackle box should be heavily stocked with Rat-L-Traps.

  • Flat-out catches fish
  • Flashing, shimmering shad-like profile
  • Super-tight wiggle
  • Calibrated to emit Liv-N-Sound
  • Durashell finish

Bleeding Shad colors all have bright red treble hooks.

When nothing else works... When nothing else works I tie on a blue and silver Rat-L Trap. They always work. January 30, 2009
Cant go wrong This bait is excellent all around. I have 3 favorite lipless ratltraps when i go fishing. Strike King Redeye shad, bass pro shops XPS rattle shad and this. All three of them just catch fish. My favorite colors are chrome blue, electric silver, chartreuse belly craw, chrome black, and bleeding chrome blue. my favorite retreives are a slow retreive or start and stop or let it sink to the bottom and rip it along the bottom. I have been using this bait ever since i started fishing and will never stop using it. i always keep at least 10 in my tackle box and a variety of colors. the paint will chip pretty easily but its a lipless crank and all of them chip at somepoint. give one a try and see what all the hype is about. Good Luck! March 27, 2012
The Original Original Rat-L-Trap Says it all, it's the best around for the money, I was fishing in muddied water that was probably 50 degrees or less during the winter and i decided to pick up a 1/2 ounce chrome and blue Rat-L-Trap and on the third cas caught a 2 1/2 pounder that engulfed the bait when I ripped the bait out of some dead weeds in 7 feet of water. July 12, 2010
Best Ohio Double Header While fishing a private 28 acre lake in March. My 14yr old son "Austin" caught and released a 81/2 lb. and 9 lb. Largemouths on back to back cast using a 1/2 ounce, red Rattletrap. I was just about to tell him to change up lures when the big fish hit. I guess he showed me! December 6, 2007

It will work for pike and walleye but do with the heavier models. I would do oranges and yellows and greens. I caught a 48inch pike with this. Try a 1/2 or 3/4 ounce lure

A:
They can work for pike/walleye. The size and color, though, depend on when and where you are fishing. Since it can vary from one body of water to another, we suggest you speak to someone locally, such as local marinas or bait shops. Your local conservation department will also be able to help.

A:
I have caught many nice walleyes and northern pike on these lures. The best color depends on the type of forage that the fish generally feed on where you're fishing, but for me, the lures that replicate shad colors work best because that's the primary fish in my lake for walleyes and northerns to feed on. Whether you catch big fish or little fish depends on the location and general size of the fish in the water you're fishing. Personally, I've got walleyes ranging from 2 lbs up to 7 lbs on this lure. Northern pike generally run larger. As for size of the lure, I use the 3-inch version most often.

Absolutely. Great summer bait over and around weed lines for pike. Used them extensively in Canada in July.

You will want to pick your colors based on the water clearity.

These are mostly for bass (small mouth and large mouth)

I don't know anyone that catches trout on these, but I'm sure its possible. These are great bass lures but I would pick up some panther martins for trout

A:
For instance, when water clarity is poor (visibility a foot or less), many pros use chartreuse colors. Red hooks are sometimes called blood hooks. They represent a bleeding bait fish. The general consensus on red hook is that it ca not hurt, and even if it helps only a little, a little help is a good thing on a slow day.

Experience is the best teacher, and if you are having problems getting a good hookset with one type of hook, trying another could give you a revelation that saves the day. The only really important thing to keep in mind is using a hook that is matched in size to the species you are targeting.

I'm not sure about your lake, but I prefer the original hooks. I'm not a big red hook fan on any of my baits, but that's a personal decision. Your best decision is the RAT-L-TRAP, regardless of the hook!

The bait color is good in clear water but the hook choice is not. If the water color is semi clear go for it.

it depends on the water your fishing. the lakes i fish are clear so i tend to fish more natural looking baits. white silver or craw colors. in darker water i will use a brighter colored bait. the red hooks adds flash or a bleeding affect. hope that helps. keep reeling!!!

They now use "Set-Lok" hooks manufactured by Eagle Claw. The older hooks were pretty good quality too and I thought that they were Eagle Claw as well. The hook sizes vary depending on lure size but the front hook is usually one size larger than the rear hook. An example is the 1/2 ounce size that has a #4 front hook and #6 rear hook.

I would replace the front one with a #4 and the back with a #6 and mustad is a good brand.

Give them a try. You have nothing to lose and maybe a lot to gain. They definately work well in fresh water.

My guess would be that the Rattle Traps would work. I certainly would give them a try. You might be in for a surprise..

Well yes but Bill Lewis does make saltwater versions of this bait with better hooks suited for saltwater and better colors for saltwater. If you buy this bait in the saltwater version I recommend red head or chrome w/ pink.

Absolutely, you will have bites from all sizes and I've landed several 5+ pound fish on the Original Rattle Trap.

Shad & Crayfish patterns are what I would want on TN river and KY lake. I used to use Rat 'L' Traps as my main lipless crankbait because they worked well just about anywhere I fished. Rapala Clackin' Raps catch bass better than other lipless crankbaits because they make a different sound with 1 huge tunsten rattle in a metal chamber. You need Clackin' Raps - they are better than any other lipless crankbait for big bass. My favorite clear water colors are Yellow Perch & Hot Steel, but Red Crawdad is great in stained water. You will always find Clackin' Raps in all my tackleboxes, and on my rod. They are that great of a lure for huge bass. I start out with a Clackin' Rap on each spot and don't leave a spot without throwing it again. It catches so many good fish that it's hard to put it down and use anything else. In lakes I do great along the deep weed edge tight as possible to the weeds without snagging them. In rivers fish near rock piles, wing dams, and logs/trees.

I have fished Kentucky Lake and various rivers successfully with this bait. When the bite falls off on the 1/2 oz chrome w/ blue back, I will go to a shad color. In stained water, go bright, and in clear, go to natural
colors. Early spring, try orange or red.
Use burn and drop and pumping methods,
along with slow rolling.
This bait is AWESOME for ALL fish any size!
See my 14# 2 oz Ms Bass caught on a trap!
The other three are also over 10# on a trap!

I can't see in the online catalog if these lures are sinking or floating. I heard that a floater is available which is the one I'm interested in.
