"I’ve spent a lot of time in Alaska at the time the bears are fishing and it’s truly one of the great annual animal happenings in North America. And it’s a part of a fascinating cycle of nature. Salmon are born in fresh water streams and rivers, then head to the ocean to spend most of their life. Salmon return to exact same spot to reproduce then die. Bears gorge on salmon during and after spawning, transferring needed nutrients from ocean and stream to trees and plants through their scat. Wow! In this sculpture, Mother bear transfers to her young the skills to continue this fascinating circle of life.”
