“I have been beyond fortunate when it comes to waterfowl hunting. As the host of the Ducks Unlimited television show for eight seasons, I participated in over 100 hunts in twenty-some states plus Mexico and Canada. I also hunt regularly with friends and family here in Montana, in Texas, in Canada and more. With so many chances in so many places, I’ve taken all but two species of waterfowl legal to hunt in North America. When folks see my waterfowl taxidermy collection (which cost me about the same as a car), the question is always the same: “What is your favorite species?” And while I love pursuing any and all ducks and geese and enjoy the nuances of each, the Pintail tops my list. While God made most duck species beautiful (sorry mergansers and scoters), I think the “Sprig” is most handsome of all and I love the way they fly, the way they decoy, their whistle, everything. Mallards and Canvasbacks are a close second, but I suspect an image of a pintail will be engraved on my tombstone!”
