I use this when I am spooling a reel. It enables me to know how much line is going onto my reel without having to guess.

I had never used a line counter before, but I bought 2 new ultralight spinning rods for a trout fishing trip. I figured I would get the line counter so I would know I had the right amount on each reel without having to buy extra line ( good flourocarbon ain't cheap ). The counter worked great. I am very pleased with the purchase.

I purchased this line counter exlusively for counting line and backing for spooling purposes. It works just fine for that application however if I were deep jigging, I would want a higher end counter.

Can you use this when respooling fishing line with the Berkley portable line spooler? If so how and if not how can you use a counter with the respooker?
Yes, in fact I think it works better with braided line since it has more abrasiveness than mono. (Helps hold the line more securely in the counter slot).
My concern would be that I might want to use it on different rods and for spooling other reels. I don't want it to mar or damage the finish on the rod. Any tools needed to install/remove it?
No tools are needed. It has a plastic clamp something like a clothes pin. Then there is a lockdown bolt and nut to secure it. It should fit on any rod and it did not damage my rods at all.
It has a screw down clamp that has rubber on it to protect the rod . No tools necessary. You can switch it to another rod in less than 1 minute. The clamps work really good and you really don't have to clamp them down very tight. Hope that helps out.
Yes, that is what I used it on. The only thing was I had to turn the rod with the reel on top so I could see the counter. I had to turn the handle on the reel backwards since it was upside down. But it was no problem.
Yes but it will not last long and you will want to rinse it very good after each use. I would seriously think about buying a reel with one built in it already. That is the way to go for sure. Good Luck.
I only attach these when trolling. I take them off when casting, since it is SO easy to do so. I think the fishing line might wrap around the device when casting.
