There are NO disadvantages to this paddle - my next one will be the full boat carbon fiber paddle for longer days on the water. This padle is well built, durable and a huge step up from your basic $100 or less paddle. Built in fish tape and hook retriever make this a purpose built fishing paddle.

I bought this paddle based on reviews of all the paddles at Bass Pro Shops, starting at the cheapest and working my way up the price list until I felt comfortable with what I saw for comments. Most of the cheaper paddles had comments about how if you put any power into your stroke, the paddle would flex/give and you would lose your energy into the paddle bending instead of the boat moving. Being new to kayaking (I've canoed for years but just bought an Ascend FS12) I have no experience with paddles. After using the Bending Branches Angler paddle I have to admit I could "still" feel the paddle bending when I really came on to it, but maybe it isn't as noticeable as the lower priced ones? Overall it appears to be well made, fits together tightly, and is lightweight too, so I'm still happy with it. I haven't had to use the hook retriever yet. :)

I bought my kayak specifically for fishing, but I wasn't sure if there was really a difference in the so-called "fishing paddle." The paddle itself is wonderful! It's well built and works great. And the fishing aspects are nice as well.
The measuring tape is just convenient. In theory your paddle is already out and ready when you catch a fish.. so you don't have to go digging for a tape.
And the hook retrieval notch has saved some of my favorite lures! Originally I was skeptical of that feature, but it really does work!

I got this paddle with the 128T yak and it works very well. It's light and it's long so you can really 'dig' into the water from the high seat of the 128T Haven't had to use the bait retriever yet.
