I wouldn't use weight - it would alter the action. they do sell lead tape that can be put on any bait. You may also solder some lead on the bottom of the bait.

I don't use a weight. I just let it swim naturally.Fish are usually looking up for food anyway.

I've used the baby bass and gizzard shad and caught a ton of fish. I'm sure the bluegill pattern would work just as well

A good alround color is the Bluegill because bluegills are a good bait source to bass around the country unlike trout or shad.

They typically don't hold at any depth. the more line you let out, the deeper - They go down anywhere from 5-10 feet.
