baught this reel when my old Penn somthingorother broke down thx to a big catfish I grabbed the cheapest one avalible. This reel worked well under pressure and would have landed a 9 foot shark if the wire hadn't broken. I would love to buy another.

THIS IS A GREAT REEL. CAN'T BEAT IT FOR THE PRICE. FIRST TIME OUT I CAUGHT A 31LB AND 22 LB SHOVEL HEAD. REELED THEM IN WITH EASE.THE SPOOL SIZE DOES NOT HOLD AS MUCH AS IT SAYS. I SPOOL IT WITH 65 LB BPS BRAIDED IT HELD 300 YARDS. OVERALL A GREAT REEL WITH A GREAT PRICE.

So far so good, have used it many times so far. I use it trolling for stripers and I think its going to work real well for that big one.

I want a reel that can be used trolling for crappie in deep water 20 - 35 footAnswers
A:
You could, A little big for crappie.A:
Much too large a reel for crappie. Try the Abu Garcia ambassadeur 6600bcx reel instead. only 20 more dollars for a much more manageable and higher quality reel which will catch most anything you want. Also, is much more forgiving on casting than most, has instant anti-reverse, and can handle the lighter lines you'll need to use for those finicky crappie who can see the larger lines and not bite...Details:
I'm wondering what would be a good rod to compliment this reel for blue catfish, striped bass and walleye.Answers

THE BEEF STICK SURF AND BOAT RODS.A:
At least a med heavy to heavy action 10-12 foot baitcasting rod. If fishing in rivers with lot of current, you'll need the heavy action for the large 4-8 ounce weight you'll have to use to keep bait on bottom and not washing down river and getting snagged constantly. I fish in the Arkansas river for large blue and flathead catfish from 5 to 50+ lbs on a regular basis and I use as much as 8 ounces to keep baits in place. Meathunter makes a great 12-13 foot rod for catfishing at this time. You can look them up online, or go to a larger local tackle shop to find them. Personally, I use an older 14 ft. Fenwick rod which is no longer even made, and it's the best for large river fishing.Details:
i bought this reel and took it out to the yard and tried casting it with a 2oz weight and when i cast it the weight gets thrown straight to the ground i even put another 2oz weight on it same outcome i have it on a 7'6 rod ive messed with the cast control knob i dont get it any suggestion or a vid of someone casting theirs would really helpAnswers
A:
Best thing to do is to set the lever to free spool with the weight in the air. adjust the control knob until the weight starts to move by itself at a controlled speed. You don't want it to just drop by itself, or just barely move when in free spool. If you're looking to really crank it out there, I always dip my reel in the water first and get the line wet as dry line will really burn your thumb on casting. Use your thumb to lightly put pressure on spool to avoid any backlashes or over run of the line. Good Luck.Top 1000 Contributor

you have to set the clutch tension so that the reel will just barely unroll with the weights attached (holding the rod parallel with the ground). This ensures the clutch is set to your weight.Just remember, this is a Trolling Reel. I do cast with it, but it's not meant for long casting distances.
The most use I get from this reel, is simply dropping off the back of the boat while trolling, and using the clutch to feed line out. I've used planers and birds on this reel, and had a lot of success. I will pick up 2 more of these reels for my next trip to OBX.
A:
You're using to big of a weight for this reel. I had the same problem when I did that. I just switched to a lighter weight and the problem went away.Answers
A:
Sorry, but too flimsy for saltwater by far. I destroyed mine on just a 38 lb. blue catfish in freshwater, and any of the fish I encountered while fishing off shore in North Carolina would absolutely tear these reels up. There's just too much plastic parts and plastic gears internally to handle truly large fish dependably. Get any of the larger Penn reels and you'll be perfectly happy in the salt.Top 1000 Contributor
A:
Absolutely. I've used it for 2 seasons and it's still going strong.I use planers and birds with this reel, and it performs flawlessly.
Once a fish is hooked while trolling, there's no need to slow the boat. This reel is like a winch. You just crank and it easily pulls in your fish.
A:
This reel is not recommended for saltwater use. Since the reel is specifically made for freshwater fishing, the saltwater may dramatically reduce the life of the reel. Thank you!A:
Certainly. It's sturdy enough to land a 7 foot, 140 pound spinner shark. Just make sure you clean it up real well after taking it out there. If you look it is almost identical to the Offshore Angler GCL-30 with the exception of the fact that this reel only has two bearings.

I load mine up with close to 400 yards of 30 lb test mono and I can crank it out there between 125 to 150 yards with my 14 ft rod and 8 ounce weight on it. Once again, the reel doesn't hold up well to large fish though. too many plastic parts inside to be truly durable.A:
Yes you can cast far with these reels. You have to have 2 oz of weight or more for it to cast decent. I am able to cast this at least 30 yards.A:
It casts like a dream if you know how to cast a baitcaster.....must use at least a 3 oz weightTop 1000 Contributor
A:
Yes, these reels cast well. I use 6oz of weight or more.Your choice of rod will also affect the casting. But to answer your question, no they are NOT just for trolling.

They are made for trollingA:
