I bought this rod specifically to throw the Alabama Rig, it does an outstanding job. My previous rod was only a medium duty and with the weight of the A-Rig it was an ounce or more of weight I and it eventually it bent the guide at the top of that rod. This bad boy, no problems at all. Can be used for catfish and saltwater fishing as well. Although its fiberglass construction its alot lighter than I thought it would be. I bought the 6' 6" Medium - Heavy (2 piece) I couldn't be happier with it.

Bought this rod in the 7'6" version for my son in Kansas. He took it trolling for Walleye and Catfish and said it performed perfectly. Demonstrating amazing power and backbone. I actually bought a 6' 6" a few years ago and have loved it as well.
Would abosolutely consider buying another one.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. For some reason, I relied on the BPS salesman and took his word for it, that this was the rod I needed. I purchased the 7'6" spinning model and was pleasantly surprised how well this rod worked on my trip to Kodiak, AK. I paired it with a Penn Battle 5000 with Power Pro 30lb braid. No trouble what so ever with 9-14lb coho and 5-9lb pinks. This combination muscled them all with aplomb. The two piece rod also made it easier for the flights getting there. I would recommend this rod assuredly.

recently went on a trip to the tropics,took the 7'6"model.it performed well under the rough fishing conditions;catching medium sized snook(robalo)with 1/4 oz swim-baits.it takes muscle to yank the fish out from under the mangrove roots.the rod is not the most sensitive,but had ample strength.I even accidentally whacked it once on the ceiling fan,and nothing happened.will use it again on my next trip.

I would say a Ugly Stik regular or Ugly Stik Lite, in about 5 1/2 ft. They are very reasonably priced and you can't kill them.Best idea would be to go to a Bass Pro store and feel them. You don't want to over-rod a youngster, but with this type rod they will be able to use it for a good while as they grow.

Yes, but you may find the butt grip to be too short and therefore not provide enough support under your elbow.
