The Johnny Morris Signature Series Spinning Reel not only retains the awesome performance profile of the original award-winning version, but locks it in with our sealed aluminum body construction. The frame and side plates are as light and strong as ever, but dust and debris can’t get in—so the lube retains its viscosity, wear is reduced, and interior parts continue to function crisply. (We still recommend regular maintenance, of course.)
To double-ensure durability, we added our sealed carbon fiber drag. Carbon is unmatched for dissipating drag heat, and our six-washer system is sealed tight for ultimate smoothness at all times. With its die-cast aluminum chassis, stainless steel main shaft, zinc-alloy drive gear, and hardened brass pinion gear, it’s obvious this reel will be around awhile! Just got this for Fathers Day. I love the reel, very smooth.the 6:1 ratio is great for top water lures
Considering the reels I have owned previously I would have to give this 4 stars at first outing. hopefully it holds up over the long haul.

As far as the reels performance, cant complain, but I have to clean it twice as many times as other reels because some of the components are not stainless. If the reel had all stainless parts I would give it 5 stars.

First spinning reel I have owned with the over-sized spool. Casts like a dream. Distance and accuracy is top notch. I use 6# mono on mine and I could not be more pleased. GREAT product. Spinning reels are like paint brushes, you get what you pay for.

I am looking for a new all purpose reel for my 7' MH fast action rod. I was had my heart set on the Stradic 2500 Model but then I saw this at the JM40 model. I like the idea that this reel's spare spool is made for braid since that was my plan with the stradic, 12lbs mono on one spool and 10/20 braid on on the other spool. Which do you guys think is better?

I have both and the Stradic is prettier on a rod but I feel that the JM outperforms the Stradic. Saves you a few bucks too.

Before they remodeled this reel, I would say his one. Now, I would go with the stratic.A:Â
I had the JM40 model. Used 8 lb for a few months, then 10 lb mono and both were excellent for this reel. Never got a chance to use the braid. Had planned on using for striper, bt never got to it. Too much largemouth fishing i guess. Hope this helps.Chuck D.

Whenever I hold this reel horizontally, it is very quiet and smooth. I whenever I hold it verticallly (for example, when jigging), it makes a clicking/grinding sound approximately every other turn of the handle. Any idea what may be causeing this, and how to fix it?Answers

you can but I wouldn't because if you catch big fish it will happened again and that can ruined your day. if you live in the south of fish for big fish than get a small inshore saltwater reel.Details:Â

I highly recommend the 40. I have landed several 6 pounders with the 40 and there was plenty of power to handle them. The 20 would be a bit light.A:Â
I'd definitely go with the 40. Can use 8 or 10 on it nicely. I had a MH 6'6" bionic blade paired with my JM40 and loved it. Rebuilding the same rig next week as i lost my other one. Hope this helps. then again, it also depends on what type of fishing you are doing. Bass fishing I would definately go with at least 8 or 10 lb test.

The JM 40 spinning reel is a "horse" with a MH 6'6" spinning rod - check out attached photo, fish caught with JM 40 - Pro Qualifier MH rod and 30# braid with fluorocarbon leader, SON. I wouldn't want a bass over 5 lbs. on the 20. The MH rod is too much for a 20 size. I have both sizes. Pair the 20 with a Carbonlite M or even ML.Images for this Answer

if you're putting it on a mh rod, i would assume you will be using a wider range of baits with this particular setup. if that's the case, i would suggest the 40 size. it's obviously going to be bulkier than the 20 and will hold more line (and more larger line). i actually own the 20 size, but i use it specifically for dropshotting. i do have the 40 size in the extreme, and it is more of an all purpose reel in my opinion.A:Â

A maufacturer out of China by the name of OEM manufacturing makes these and the rest of BassPro's reels too . They make most in S. Korea but some in China as well .This company also produces it own line of reels called Tica and many other comapanies reels for them also . They make Shakespear ( who owns Pflueger too and bass pro pays royalties to sell Pfluegers), Browning who really sells exclusively through BassPro ( BassPro pays royalties to Browning to sell reels in their name so basically these are BassPro reels too ), South bend , Pinnacle , some of Cabelas , and many others as well . They also manufacture many parts for other companies too . In all they will in a given year produce anywhere from 25-75% of the worlds reels for that year . Not all companies get the quality control that bass pro can demand because of its shear number of units bought or the discount on production costs as well for the same reason . BassPro as you have seen by their prices pass a portion of those savings on to us the consumer . Not all reels that look simialar are the same in qualitity but if you want to be sure go with basspro their machining tolerances are very demanding .Details:Â
What is the instant anti-reverse feature. What does it do? Would it be helpful for a fisherman with only one arm? If yes, why?Thanks.

instant anti-reverse is helpful regardless if you had 1 arm or 10. All it means is there is no play in the handle that will allow the bail to give line to the fish when it hits. On some reels the bail will swing a half turn or so if line is pulled out. The anti reverse will ensure that once the bail is engaged the only line that can be pulled out will be depending on your drag setting. In other words the real has zero 'Play' in it. Think of it as a car steering wheel with no play.

The anti-reverse keeps the reel spool from spinning backwards. Good for anyone not wanting to use a free spool instaed of a auto drag system.

Instant anti-reverse is where when you are reeling in a lure and the fish hits and you set the hook the handle will stay right where it is . In past years reels would have some play in the handle so that when you hooked the fish every time the handle would go in reverse a little ways before it would stop and start the drag system . They have a bearing in them now that only goes in one direction so that the handle will only go one way that is unless you turn the antireverse off ( this is called backreeling ) . Thats where the reel takes line in when you crank one way and lets line back out ( for a surging fish ) by turning the handle the other direction . Hope that helps you out in some way . Yes. If you want a Johnny Morris reel for that rod than the JM 10 is for you. It's a light duty reel with plenty of drag power if you hook a big one and casts very well. You might also want to look into the Bass Pro Shops Micro Lite reels. I have two of the Micro Lite combos and love them for panfish.

Yes the 10 size model would complement any light rod you will buy . I own better reels ( you get what you pay for ) but this is one of the best at this price . They go sale pretty regularly so watch for a even better deal to come along . Hope that helps in someway . Good Luck and tight lines !Answers

We do not recommend using the reel in saltwater.

I wouldn't but if you do you would have to, without fail, each time rinse, clean and lube immediately after use.A:Â

Yes it has a gasket on it . You will of course need to rinse off soon as possible all reels used on salt water . This is a must for all . You would however be better suited to go to saltwater fishing reels at top of page to find a reel that was meant specifically for saltwater . There a ton of reels in the same price range available that are very nice reels too . Hope that helps you out in some way .
