I really don't like doing reviews after I've used something for an extended piece of time. I've had this reel about 1 month, and used it for around 15 hrs. Since I use left handed retrieve reels my choices aren't as vast as those right handed models. So far I've really been impressed with this reel. The tension knob and drag star both feature a click system so you can tune it precisely. When I first got it my had several days of bad weather and I wasn't able to get out and use if. I did some practice in the back yard with it and tried intentionally to backlash it. This was more difficult than I thought it would be. Overall this reel is rather light and smooth as glass out of the box.

I own two dozen reels in many different price ranges and this reel is among the worst casting. My old model Extreme reels cast much further as do my Browning MIdas and Carbonlite reels.

This is my second one and am very pleased. I took my first to Lake El Salto a year ago and caught 200 fish in 3 days and it performed flawlessly. It still is as smooth as the first day. It's worth the money. I have 3 of the red tourney reels and have had to send every one back for repairs. Spend the extra money for the Johnny Morris reel.

Excellent reel so far. The dual braking system allows you to cast lightweight balsa baits like the # 7 shad rap without too much fear of backlash, even in the wind. Price is right as well. Good value for the money.

I am going silver salmon (Coho) fishing in Alaska this August. I plan on using Power Pro braided line (20lb/6lb mono dia or 30 lb/8lb mono dia) and would like to know if this reel can handle the fight and the line. I think that I require just about 200 yards of fishing line on the reel for the possible fighting runs and a 15lb drag would be nice. If this reel can not standup for the fight then what would be recommended and can handle braided line?.

I'd take the Browning Midas reels over these anytime !! They cast much further and can be easily adjusted depending on wind conditions.

I have never cast the Browning Midas,but I do however have lots of experience with the Johnny Morris. The Johnny Morris is one of the smoothest casting reels I have used and probably the best reel you can get for the money . That being said, once you get in to the mid to high end reels, they all cast around the same distance and the difference in distance is negligible. I handled the browning in store and it seems to be of good quality, but the Johnny morris appears to be noticeably better. They both have dual breaking systems with both magnetic and centrifugal brakes. If you can, I would suggest handling both, but I am confident you will like the Johnny Morris better.Q:Â

you want to add oil to all (1-3) of the spool bearings. They are possibly located in the side plate, on the spool itself, and under the tension knob. Some reels use plastic bushings in these places instead of bearings. Its best to look at the schematics that came with the reel and go from there. Just add a drop of oil in the crevice towards the center of the bearing. Good luck!Q:Â

This reel works fantastic with braid. Ive used 50lb to 70lb braid on my johnny morris with success. I am currently trying out 65lb Powerpro super 8 line. I would recommend going with any 8 strand braid vs the 4-6 strand braids. It makes a big difference in both casting performance and smooth retrieval. I will never go back to using a 4-6 strand braid.Answers

Here's what has worked for me. Open up the side hatch and have 3 brakes on (pull every other tab outward) and the other 3 brakes off (push the remaining tabs inward until it clicks in). Turn the magnetic brakes on the side to 0 and adjust the spool tension knob so that the lure falls very slowly when the thumb bar is engaged. I then set the magnetic brakes to 7 for everyday routine fishing...maybe 5 if I need a super long cast. This is an unbelievably great reel--experiment with the settings.Keep in mind the fewer brakes you use...the more likely an over run if you throw it too hard. Pros know how to cast with no brakes. I'm not a pro. I want to fish...I don't want to spend Saturday mornings picking at back-lashes. I get plenty of casting distance with the set up I described. Best wishes.

you can use the magnetic brakes on the side of the reel and then you pop the side open and then set the pin brakes. i recoment to disengage all your brakes by pushing them inward then engage 2 brakes and they have to be across from each other. and the magnetic brake i would set at 10 and then work your way down as you get comfortable.Details:Â
I was wanting to buy thiws over the Abu Revo Sx bc everyone I know has the revo and they seem the same but does Anyone know why the Abu has such a stronger Drag System? Does that 10 lbs matter? ALSO, if anyone knows which one casts further please let me know. THanks!!Answers

No comparison. Get the Johnny Morris. The Abu Revo SX is very, very temperamental. For me, using the Revo SX is like shaving with a straight razor. It's a great reel that casts enormous distances, but it'll cut you badly once in a while.The same cast you were using all morning can result in an enormous backlash out of the blue.The Johnny Morris DBS is the key. That's the difference between the JM and the Revo SX (magnetic only). Work on it and dial in those brakes. You'll be able to throw it to the point where you won't need your thumb for the landing of the lure...I don't recommend that...I'm just saying that's how good the Johnny Morris reel is. It's a work of art. I engage 3 centrifugal brakes and set the magnetic brakes around 6 or 7 and I can cast 30 yards no problem. I'm not a pro--that's plenty of distance for me. I find that the Revo SX casts further, but the consistency of the Johnny Morris far outweighs that strength.

I have had the Revo SX and I found that it was hard to use! It has a steep learning curve, where as the Johny Morris is extremely user friendly! It sets up quick and cast like a dream, as for the distance it's about the same for me anyway. But I guess that goes whit experience!You can get the Revo if you like, it's an awesome reel, I just found it hard to use.
My passe is more the Johny Morris! The dual braking system is super, but like any other casting reel, if your not careful it will overrun! Just a bit of practice. As far as the extra ten pounds of drag, it doesn't really mater, there are some casting reels that only have three pounds of drag and they work great. The trick is to have an educated thumb!

I understand this reel is categorized under freshwater, and I have been using this reel for freshwater fishing. However, since I moved closer to the coast now, I was wondering if it will be fine to use this reel in saltwater? Maybe a quick rinse after?Answers

i have used this reel in the sanfrancisco bay for strippers and after am done i clean it with some reel cleaner or reel majic and the real works just fine.

It should be OK. If you rinse and dry after each use, or as soon as possible! Also you WILL HAVE TO clean,oil,lube after every third or fourth trip out! It can be a bit of a pain, but that way you will be sure that your reel will last a long time! I have reels which I use for saltwater, that are four, five years old. They work just fine, but I take them apart and clean them every other week, or six trips to the saltwater!Answers

the 20HD is a wider spool reel, holds more line.

The difference between the two is that the JMX20HA holds more line than the JMX10HA!
