I have had the Revo SX and I found that it was hard to use! It has a steep learning curve, where as the Johny Morris is extremely user friendly! It sets up quick and cast like a dream, as for the distance it's about the same for me anyway. But I guess that goes whit experience!

You can get the Revo if you like, it's an awesome reel, I just found it hard to use.

My passe is more the Johny Morris! The dual braking system is super, but like any other casting reel, if your not careful it will overrun! Just a bit of practice. As far as the extra ten pounds of drag, it doesn't really mater, there are some casting reels that only have three pounds of drag and they work great. The trick is to have an educated thumb!

Saltwater usage?

Details:
I understand this reel is categorized under freshwater, and I have been using this reel for freshwater fishing. However, since I moved closer to the coast now, I was wondering if it will be fine to use this reel in saltwater? Maybe a quick rinse after?

It should be OK. If you rinse and dry after each use, or as soon as possible! Also you WILL HAVE TO clean, oil, lube after every third or fourth trip out! It can be a bit of a pain, but that way you will be sure that your reel will last a long time! I have reels which I use for saltwater, that are four, five years old. They work just fine, but I take them apart and clean them every other week, or six trips to the saltwater!

On the left side is an oval button, a little smaller than a dime. Press this and turn the side plate and it comes off. The centrifugal drags are inside on the spool.

The handles are rubber, they feel like the reel grips that are so popular. This reel would handle 30 but Id say 20 is more of a good fit. You wouldnt have much line if you spool it with 30. 20 lb braid would be far to thin to put on a baitcaster. Whatever line diameter the reel is rated for is what size braid you would want. In this case it would be 50 or 65 braid. Many anglers make this mistake and dont understand why the braid digs into itself so bad. Spinning gear is more suited for small braid. This reel will cast as far and as accurate as any on the market. The only limitations will be your skill set with a baitcaster. Good Luck!

To get to the brake pins, you need to remove the side plate by pressing in the basspro logo and twisting the side plate counter clockwise. Anything over 14lb test diameter will greatly effect your casting performance. I would stick with 12lb diameter mono or 50-55lb braid as it is equivalent to 12lb diameter mono. This reel will hold 120yards of 12lb diameter line, so you should have plenty of room to let a fish run. This reel will cast as far and accurately as any other baitcaster, buy it with confidence.

If you have the funds it is definitely worth it. The PQ is a nice reel for the money but this thing is top notch. Smoother than any Curado or Revo ive used and built like a tank! Get you one, you wont regret it!!

The Pro Qualifier is a great reel at a great value and an even better value when Its on sale. That being said, The Johnny Morris is one of the smoothest reels I have used. I feel that the Johnny Morris is more durable due to it using more metal parts vs the Pro Qualifiers plastic. I have had the Pro Qualifiers plastic line guide assembly fail on me where the Johnny Morris' metal line guide assembly has never failed me. You will be fine with either reel as they both cast great. Good Luck!

Cast controle?

Details:
How easy is the dual cast control to set. Is it really fussy, or is it user friendly! What is the starting point? Where do you set the magnets, and where do you set the centrifugal brakes? Is this system reliable, once set, when changing the lures, do both systems have to be reset, or just one or the other? Is this system more forgiving for a novice user? I've been at it for three seasons, but I'm still learning!Once you pass a certain price range, is one brand better than an other for different people!,or is it just preference?Example, would a BPS reel be easier to use, for me, than say a Shimano of the same specks?

Thank you for your time,
tight lines and be safe!

A:
I like them. The dual system is easy; I begin with 2 centrifugal brakes set. This works for most lures except heavy crankbaits like DD22's. For those I set 3 brakes.

Next, set the static drag so the lure drops slowly when you push the release and wiggle the rod. Finally, set the mag drag about half (5).

Now, cast and watch the spool. If you notice the line unwinding too fast at the beginning of the cast - the line on the spool looks like it expands - set more centrifugal brakes. If it spools out near the end of the cast set the mag higher. If you get neither try less mag drag.

You'll need to set the mag drag higher when casting into the wind. Finally, remember baitcasters are not much use for lighter than 1/2 oz lures or in high wind - in those conditions you need a spinning rig.

I use 12 lb flouro on mine, not the most forgiving line but works on these reels. Overall I would rate them a very good value for the price.

One last tip: be careful not to get any oil on the centrifugal drag brakes or ring. I run a clean dry q-tip around mine from time to time. They dont need to be cleaned or lubed and if you get oil in the system it will not work correctly.

A:
Well Ive been using baitcasters for 20 years and I believe these are the most forgiving of any I have used. Start out with 2,3, or 4 of the pin brakes on but make sure theyre balanced. Set the dial to 5-7 and tighten the cast control up to where the bait will slowly fall. This should make it very hard to backlash, then after a few casts and you get used to it, loosen the cast control up a click or two and/or loosen the dial up a number or two until u get it as loose as you can comfortably cast it without a backlash. I run mine with two brakes on and the dial on 5 with the cast control basically free spooled. As far as the price range, I promise you there is not a better reel out there for the money. Ive owned Curados and Revos and in my opinion this reel is much better in every aspect, for less money. These reels are durable, easy to use, and look and feel amazing. I just sold off about 5 Shimanos and loaded up with these! Good luck with your purchase and best wishes!

Braid is neat line. Small diameter, no stretch, sensitivity, easy to tie, no line memory. In fact it only has one problem: You can't catch a fish using it. I don't know why - Maybe visibility; maybe sound; I don't know. I've tried it on and off for several years; it just doesn't work.

Try a good quality mono or flouro for spinners. I've used PLine exclusively since my wife landed a 10-6 LBM is heavy weeds on 6 lb PLine flouro. I'd suggest 10 lb PLine flouro.

As a general rule you want braid that is the same diameter as what the reel is rated for. In this case I believe its rated for 12 lb test. Naturally a little bigger or smaller is fine but you dont want braid thats 4lb diameter as it will dig into itself pretty bad. When I use braid Its always 50 or 65 lb as these are 12-14 lb diameter. Good luck!
