Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series Bass Caster Baitcast Reel/Signature Series II Trigger Rod Combo 5 5 18 18
Dale Hollow Smallies I purchased this combo in the 7'2 MH Fast before my trip to DH. I was nervous at first to break out a new rod and bait caster, so I started with my 6'6 St. Croix and Shimano Senoma spinning combo. Had good luck with it, but came unbuttoned at least three times. After a morning break, switched to the new combo paired with 10 lb P-Line clear. I have a Abu black max and often backlash, even with braid, so I was nervous casting at first. After three or four successful casts, I gave it a hard throw without the thumb....WOW, smooth as can be and I was zipping a 1/2 oz jig with trailer a MILE. Next up was my first smallie... A VERY healthy 4+ lb, 19ish" fatty! The rod and real handled like a dream! The drag was smooth and the rod provided plenty of backbone to easily set the hook in probably 25 ft of water. I went on to boat at least 5 more with this combo - largest being 21.5" and almost 5 lbs. I would consider myself a beginner with casting reels and I did only backlashed this combo one time in 2 full days casting. Winds at one point was 15+ and I was doing fine casting into the wind, side angles, etc. Highly recommend!!! November 18, 2011
wouldn't want a different setup I have had the johnny morris rod and reel for a couple of years. It's the best fishing rig i have ever had. The reel is really smooth and can fight a big fish with ease. The rods are the best, knowing you can torque a huge bass or catfish from deep water. I even have one setup for trolling for hybrid bass and it performs perfectly. I hope i get another whole setup for my birthday. September 6, 2011
great baitcaster If you are looking for your first baitcaster or another one i recommend this one. The combo is great the reel is very smooth and is versitle even with a medium-heavy 7 foot rod. I use everything from worms to crankbaits to poppers. Im looking forward to getting another one. July 20, 2011
First modern baitcaster I was worried about what I was gonna end up with when I finally decided I was gonna get a Abu Garcia revo I then saw the Johnny Morris® Signature Series Bass Caster Baitcast Reel/Signature Series II. I had both in hand was reeling both feeling them out this reel felt better I got the combo and will not look back hope it holds up well so far very happy July 6, 2011

They are both good rods, but the signature series is definitely better quality with a lot more backbone. The signature series is just a tad heavier but barely nothing. IMO spend a bit more and get more bang for your buck.

I don't think you need a line counter. I own a BPS baitcaster and it works great. You may want to consider a spinning combo; the are easier to cast.

A:
If you are wanting to throw the baits you listed weightless, look no further than the Abu Garcia Revo MGX. Pair it up with a Wild Black Carrot Stix or a Duckett rod and you can sling a bird feather if you wanted. I have found that nothing can touch the MGX's Centrifugal Brake when it comes to casting light lures. It's a steep price but worth every penny.

For the reel, I would stay away from quantum. They are really picky trying to set them up for light lures. If you are rigging them weightless then definitely stay away from quantum. I have a pfleuger echelon that I use for some lighter jerkbaits that I love and for 50 bucks, you can't go wrong. The carbonlite series of reels is made more for lighter lures and I have heard and experienced good things from these reels. If you are rigging them weightless, go with the KVD 7foot MH. It has great sensitivity with a lighter tip to get the weightless plastics out there while the backbone of a MH. I have 3 KVD rods and LOVE THEM! If you are more confident with other rod brands then by all means go with them, but I would go to the medium action like a shakeyhead stick. Good luck!

A:
It depends on what you are going to be throwing on it. Frogs or alabama rigs, definitely go 50-65 lb braid. Jerkbaits, go 10-12lb flouro. Topwater, 15-20lb mono. Texas/Carolina rigs/ jigs, you can do a few things - one you can do is use braid and then tie a 6-8 foot flouro leader onto it or you can just use mono. I use mono unless I am tournament fishing and it does just fine. Shakeyhead/weightless plastics, again you can use the braid with a flouro leader or just mono. I never go under 10lb test on my mono or flouro bass fishing. There is nothing more frustrating than a busted line. If you are using the braid/leader method then make sure to check your leader frequently to make sure there is no damage to the line. Rocks or brush can weaken the line and fish will break off. Once again, nothing more frustrating than a busted line. For an all around inexpensive answer. Good ol berkley big game 12 lb. Hope this helps.

It is made for Freshwater Only. However, if you do use in saltwater make sure you properly clean and rinse the reel off with freshwater at each use. Also, you might purchase a saltwater spray. Salt-Away item 38-400-305-00.
