These cartridges are fragile in that the plastic ring near the top is delicate. Just be careful when wrestling with the plastic it comes encased in. Why did I need to replace it....the vest blew out of the boat and when it hit the water it did what it's supposed to and inflated. Moral of the story, wear the thing!

the black cap with the circular collar is very delicate. If you damage it to where the plastic ring is loose then it's no good. I believe it's a bayonet type deal where you insert it and then twist to lock in place. Once installed mine has a indicator that changes from red to green indicating it's ready.
