When we upgraded our Extreme, we asked ourselves a simple question: what does the hard-working American fisherman want in a spinning reel? The answer immediately became clear: you want an exceptional reel at a reasonable price. So we rounded up all the usual suspects from our proven past models: minimal weight, efficient and powerful gearing, rock-solid frame—and then we bundled them with a few special touches that you can only get at Bass Pro Shops. These include our Mag Spool Technology, with a 30% wider spool for faster pickup and less twist; an oversized titanium-nitride coated roller; our smooth and powerful Carbon Fiber Drag System with a stack of three carbon/three stainless steel discs; and our six stainless steel bearing system with Powerlock instant anti-reverse.

We believe our updated Extreme is the answer to all your spinning reel needs. It’s built to perform flawlessly; it’s designed to endure years of hard fights and keep coming back; and we’ve kept the price down to a level that allows anyone to own one. Plus, with four models to choose from, you can tackle just about anything that swims. Standard features include: one-piece aluminum frame with sealed sideplates; ported, forged aluminum spool; super-light graphite rotor; left- or right-hand retrieve; stainless steel shaft and bail wire; titanium nitride-coated roller; machined-aluminum handle with Soft Touch knob; and a FREE spare aluminum spool.

Ultra-Compact Gearbox:
Thinner and stronger! Solid aluminum sideplates contain the gears and prevent flex.

True Sealed Body:
Keeps debris out, allowing internals to continue working smoothly over the long haul!

Carbon Fiber Drag System:
Our premium carbon-and-stainless-steel drag washer stack assures ultra-smooth, powerful drag performance at all settings.

30% Wider Mag Spool:
Our exclusive large-diameter Mag Spool combined with the oversized titanium nitride-coated roller deliver longer casts, better line lay, smoother drag, and far less line twist.

Line recovery in inches per handle turn.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 31 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great reel until.... This was by far my most favorite reel that I own right now and i have caught over 100 bass in the 4 month period that I have owned it. But, recently at my local pond i noticed that the shaft stopped moving up and down. This caused the line being retreived to all lay on the same part of the spool. This caused terrible twists every single cast. I am sending the reel back to either get replaced or repaired and hopefully i won't have this problem again. Maybe it was just a defective one. I don't know. Overall this was a great reel during the time it worked and i would recommend to anybody besides the flaw. April 12, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good inexpensive reel Very good reel that is reliable, light, & inexpensive. The bail is a little "gummy" post cast & auto flip but otherwise is everything one would expect w/this version of a BPS reel. March 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Reel This is the first time purchasing this reel. The reel has a smooth action in casting and retrieving . I would recommend this to any avid fisherman. November 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Spinning Reel I've Ever Used I was fishing with my stepson when the spinning reel I was using locked up and wouldn't work. I had the reel for several years. Anyway, We were close to the Bass Pro Shops store, in Destin, FL, so we stopped in to find a replacement reel. I have two Extreme baitcaster reels and have been very satisfied with them so I thought I would try the Extreme spinning reel. This is the best spinning reel I have ever used. The bearings work smoothly and has a smooth retrieve. It's lightweight, has good balance and just a general all-a-round good feel. October 22, 2013

No, I have an EX20-40-50 reels and the bail doesn't self center as it has an anti-reverse bearing that stops the spool from reversing backwards which is a great hook setting feature.

A:
The Extreme reel is compact design.
strong but light. It can handle about 20b.
So it is good for both salt and fresh water.
my recommendation is to use EX50B
and give it a quick wash after use in saltwater, do not forget to lubricate it to keep it for long time.

A:
Mild corrosion on the base of the reel handle is all that has occured due to frequent use in salt water. No technical diffulties due to water. However, the drag system will break on you if you use it often at all. Also if you use braided line the spooling mechanism will miss the spool and start wraping line around the drag adjustmen knob.

Should hold up fine, I freshwater rinse mine each day. The EX50 needs a bigger handle if you fight the bigger fish.

I have my EX40 on a 7' st. croix mojo bass that has a medium action. It pairs very well with it. I would think that it would work for you as well.

I think the 20 would be more like the 2500 size. I have the 40, and it seems a little bigger than the 2500, and I have used shimanos my whole life
