I bought the chain to help hold my anchor down and so it would hook better. I haven't used it yet, but I've anchored a lot of boats and I'm thinking that the chain is so light weight there won't be much difference between using the chain and just plain rope. The tail will be told when I actually drop the hook, but I'm thinking 4' feet of 3/8" chain would be much better. I also thought the coating would help provent scratches on the boat - I don't think so. the coating looks like paint and not epoxy.

Highly discourage you from buying this for saltwater use. You cannot see what is going on inside that pvc coating. If your worried about rust then buy a galvinized anchor and chain.
