Would this be a great bass reel for 50lb braid? Specifically for the A-rig?

Details:

With the A-rig, you need a reel that can launch it like a rocket, tough like saltwater gear, and holds up to a lot of tension because the A-rig finds every stump in the lake and you need to pull the hooks straight sometimes to get the bait back. I stripped a gear on one of my good BPS Extreme reels with an A-rig and need a replacement.

not really. its much better set up for cat fishing with heavy weight and sitting still. the gear ratio is slow slow i dont think it would be too good for cast and retrieve

To get to your braking system, loosen the 2 thumb screws on the handle side of your reel, then pull your spool out and it will be on the other side of it.

this is an awesome reel..throw some 30 pd. line on it and crank em in...took 35-50 pounders with it all last year..performs well at the paylakes

I'm in tenneessee and we fish foe pretty big cats down here( 50lbs plus). We use the Bass Pro brand Excel braid 65lbs. dose great cast good too. Try it I think you'll like it, you'll need to get it on-line though, it comes in a 300 yds spool for about $32.00.

YES, BUT REMEMBER TO PUT MONO BACKING ON IF YOUR GOING TO USE A BRAIDED LINE. I USE THIS REEL WITH THE CATMAXX ROD AND CATCH FISH AS BIG AS 80LBS.

Catfishing is all the fishing I do. I highly recommend this reel. It has a good drag system and you can land a BIG cat. I landed a 54 pounder the other day, 8/24/10, along with 7 other cats weighing in at 5-12.5# and 12 smaller fish 2-4#

A:

Normally I remove the brakes to that there isn't anything slowing down the reel when I cast it. If you are not that advanced in casting a casting reel I recommend leaving them on.

It puts force on the spool to slow it down during cast. The more pins activated the more you will slow down. beginers should open 3 or 4. To get to your braking system, loosen the 2 thumb screws on the handle side of your reel, then pull your spool out and it will be on the other side of it.

I use 60 " braid when I use braid. I have less tangle problems with the heavier braid. The diameter is still small. The reel will hold all the line that you will need. I use 25 lb Fluorocarbon as my leader.

I use the Bass Pro Excel braided in a 65ib. line it dose really well for big cats, but as far as the reel, stay away from the Cat Maxx I had alot of problems with them. Try a Garcia product as far as reels go, and yes your pole will be fine.
