I am in the process of buying my second hiking pole. I gave my first one to my father-in-law so he had something to use to balance and walk with. We are hoping that he doesn't see it as a cane and uses it. My wife and I both own one and have used them for some hikes up to five or six miles at a time in the Rocky Mountain National park area and on trails around Texas. It is very usefull for maintaining balance and poking at stuff. The spring action is good to reduce the shock of the pole when it hits the ground. It is also convenient for it to colapse. Don't count on the compass to get you anywhere.

At first I had the same issue that the other review mentioned, the bottom of the pole didn't lock, but after twisting it for a few more minutes it locked into place. I like the feel of the handle and the little compass on the top is a nice touch. I also like that this is so light, that and the price were the main reasons that I bought this pole over the others in the store.
