I've never fished with toads before.
I use the Zoom toad hooks...after trying these with various brands the zoom hooks seem to make the frogs last a lot longer...hit 25 fish on one frog with those hooks.
Also, I use weighted owner wide gap swimbait hooks in 4/0 to slow roll the toads over submerged weed beds under the surface...and have hit 6 different species of fish this way. Walleye, Browns, Rainbows, Largemouth, Smallmouth, and two 26 - 31 inch channel cats.
KILLER TOADS! I have used all of the brands out there and these are the best.
Unweighted will allow you to run it on top easier. Weighted if you want it to dive quick when you give it slack. It depends on how you want to fish it.
When the bass hits, drop the rod tip and let the rod load. As soon as you feel the weight of the fish, a sideways sweeping hook set works best. I use super line...so don't hit it too hard. If you are using mono...make it faster and wider.
