With the narrow limbs and light wt this is the perfect bow for deer hunting. Safety is very quiet. The 3 dot scope is great, you can choose red or green dots and set your light intensity. Low light condition require dim dots or it can wash the target out. First shot out of the box was low and right but was on the small target at 20 yds. After zero, dead on bullseye at 20yds (top dot) and 30 yds (middle dot.) Shot over several days and after each hunt. Bullseye each time, from both ground and tree stand. Make sure you use 100 grain broadheads. Package includes field tips. Great value for the price. Even comes with string wax.

I purchased this bow new and went out for an early morning hunt with my new Recruit. Within an hour and a half, six deer came through right on path. I aimed right on, and fired. The bow sounded like a shotgun blast and the string broke sending my arrow spiraling a mile off target. I get out of the blind and turn the corner of my garage, and the same deer circled around and were standing right in front of me, all broadside and I had a brand new broken bow. Took it to have it checked out, the front branch was tightened but still had a ton of play, and the string defective. I would not recommend this bow to anyone. The employee said he has had many Recruits in for service already this season and it is a brand new bow on the market.. DO NOT BUY

by snide Barnett Recruit Big Bang for the buck!
I purchased the Barnett Recruit for my 15 yr old son at my local Bass Pro Shop. I did my research best I could via the net before purchase, and the recruit is what I settled on. Assembly was a breeze, the scope isn't high quality but it serves the purpose. Sighted in at 20-40 yards. Chronographed at 302fps with arrows supplied with 100grain tip. Decided I'd take it for a test spin that evening...paired it up with some Lumen-arrows with G5-T3 broadheads (that i also picked up at Bass Pro) dropped a doe at 39 yards...quick, clean, ethical.... Bought the crossbow that day, backstraps that evening...we have also harvested another doe since. I'd recommend any-day!

I bought this nice little crossbow this week at Bass Pro and really like it. I wasn't looking to spend too much as I can't use it for hunting in Colorado with the exception of during rifle season and I will use my 30.06 instead for the Recruit. I had a 15% off coupon so it cost me about $269.00 so it fit my requirements of powerful and inexpensive nicely.
Bass Pro had put the crossbow together so I can't tell you how hard it was, but the instructions seemed pretty easy.
The recruit is pretty lightweight and it is very narrow. It is only 18 inches axle to axle uncocked and about 14.5 inches axle to axle cocked. If you are a spot and stalk hunter, this would be easy to move through the woods with cocked, but it is not recommended by the manufacturer.
As far as speed, it shoots pretty fast and is very quiet. Accuracy is pretty good and the red dot is okay but not great.
Draw weight is 130 pounds but I did order a crank cocking device for it so that if I ever forget my cocking rope, i have a backup method to cock it. Barret gave me a part number of 170450 for the crank cocking device.
Overall, I feel this was a worthwhile purchase and i look forward to using this for general archery target shooting.
