Rated 5 out of 5 Big Crappie
I began fishing in earnest for crappie a couple of years ago and became addicted. I love eating them too. I have tried various methods fishing for them and as others may attest, the hardest part is finding them and then making the right choices regarding depth, bait and color schemes. The next issue is to catch keepers. I rarely use minnows and relied almost exclusively on jigs, most notably the Garland baby shad and Charlie sliders. I watched others trolling with minnow rigs and wondered if I could do that with jigs and did have some success doing that. Then I read online about trolling with the 300 bandits. I was very skeptical but studied trolling techniques and bought various colors of the 300 and 200 bandits and set out. Well, I was shocked when I did catch crappie, and not just crappie, but big ones. Almost all were keepers and in the last 3 weeks I have netted 5 that were over 15 inches. Still waiting to break the 16 inch barrier. I am new to trolling and have a lot to learn of course. I am ordering rod holders and different poles because for now the poles are simply stuck in rod holders, standing straight up and directly behind the boat, which is certainly not ideal, but i have been catching fish because I am patient. The fish don't bite often and you won't catch them like you will finding a nice brush pile down a few feet, but when you do get hit, the sizes are much larger. I have caught most of them on shad like colors in the 300 series. And I have caught catfish, white bass, stripers while trolling as well with bandits and other crankbaits, most notably rapalas.
