Alliant Powder® Reloder® 17 Smokeless Short Magnum Rifle Powder
RL17 a new standard
RL 17 has truly changed my reloading and shooting world. All 30-06 case derivatives from 25-06 to 30-06 attain better accuracy and substantial velocity increase, especially the Ackley versions. All belted magnums, excluding Weatherby magnums, are brought to a whole nother level of accuracy and velocity. If you handload for a 7mm rem mag, 300 Win Mag, 264 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 308 Norma mag, 358 Norma mag, or the best of them all, the 8mm Rem Mag and are not using RL 17, you are not even close to what your rifle can do. I load up my 8mm mag with 88.5 gr RL 17 with 160 gr Barnes tipped triple shocks for over 3700 fps, imagine that! My 358 Norma mag shoots 200 gr Barnes tipped triple shocks at 3200 fps with 82 gr RL 17. I have a 25-06 Ackley I use 120 gr Swift A Frames that have a MV of 3375 fps using 56 gr of RL 17. 7mag, 300mag, 338mag, there all the same, accuracy and velocity are enhanced immensely using this powder. Have fun.

300 Short Mag
The first powder that gave me consistent results in my 300 WSM was Hodgdon's Hybrid100, but when I tried Alliant RL-17 I gained over 100 fps and my groups were sub-MOA. In addition, I tried this powder in my 338 Win Mag with 225gr bullets and again reduced my group sizes with increased velocity. I did not have good results in either 280 AI or 30-06 AI, but that could be gun specific. I have no doubt this is THE short mag powder of choice.

I have used this powder in 300wsm, 270win, 308win and have had great success with accuracy and velocity improvements. It meters very good (RCBS) with no or very little cut powder. It burns clean and gives me great latitude in bullet weights. I have used it with 155gr Barnes Match burners in the 300wsm and the 308win. 140gr bullets in the 270win yielded a + in velocity with loads less than max from the Alliant site. I find the info easier to get if you go to the product ie. R-17 and then to loads it will bring up all loads they have for different calibers and then you can select your load. Barnes bullets have worked up loads using R-17 and will give you data on the phone if you need them since they haven't published them yet.
All in all its a powder that is flexible enough with calibers and bullets weight to be in most of our powder lockers. Hey its made in Switzerland by folk who make powder for rockets and tank shell. Its good and if it will stay available get some.
