junk right out of packaging! Everyone is complaining about the trigger sticking! lol Mine will only engage in the off position! You also need tiny fingers or fingernails to set the drag! Could have bought a cheap combo with line, lures, hooks and weight that would have been fun right from the start. Also would have lasted for years! This reel will last for years... in the back of my shed!!! August 22, 2012
first abu baitcaster i recently bought a silvermax and i m in love with it i bought it mainly for the price and i only had one other baitcaster and wanted atleast 2 well great thing i bought it because immediatly after buying the rod and reel my other one stopped working needless to say i will never buy daiwa again i hope this reel lasts becaushe i m about to purchase another one to replace my daiwa great reel super smooth August 21, 2012
Great Baitcaster paired with Vendetta Rod I've used it on a couple outings so far. I decided to go with the LH retrieve since I normally cast with my right hand and this will allow me to reel immediately. I'll have to get used to that a little bit, but otherwise its great. Its almost weird how smooth the retrieve is, I'm used to a little more resistance. I've had a couple backlashes, but I just need to make sure to adjust the tension between flipping and casting. It casts great. I haven't had any maintenance so I haven't entered anything for that. August 15, 2012
Would give 5 stars but release bar sticks down Purchased my Silver Max last June and paired it with a 6' Ugly Stick rod. It performs quite well for casting and bottom fishing from the beach and I am very pleased with its light weight and it can cast quite far into the wind using 30# braid without any backlashes. The mag feature works great without reducing casting distance too much. However, the release bar sticks frequently and I can only reengage the retrieve by turning the flipping switch on and manually pushing the bar up. I notice that others are having this same issue with their S/Max. Is there a fix for this defect? Will Abu Garcia replace or repair my reel as I choose? August 7, 2012

This Is a General Answer to Most Bait-casters. Tie the Lure You want to Flip or Pitch On. with the Reel on the rod at a 45 degree angel to the ground Keeping your thumb on the spool some. from thigh-en to more free spooling slowly turn the knob Till the Lure falls to the ground . when it Hits the Ground there should be no Overrun or Backlash at all with the side Plate sent to Zero.. Then if you Have wind to Deal with turn up the side Plate to cure Backlash or over runs.. You Must set the Main Knob to the weight of the Lure Your using. This is a start Setting . in time you may be able to go free up the main Knob more and be able to feather the spool with Your thumb

There's not much to it really. You just have to set the brake a little lighter.

Like any other baitcaster, you set the tension knob so the lure maintains a controlled fall during free-spool and then sat the brakes so that when the lure hits the water, you spool is not spinning too fast

I usually set mine for the weight of the lure and turn the flipping switch off. But that is just the way I do it. And the wasy I do it works pretty good until I get a backlash, one of which I have spent an hour and a half trying to fix.

I am not sure that this is the best beginners reel. I have three low-profile baitcasters. But it is cheap enough to be a good beginner reel. So I am not sure that is or is not. I do think that an anti-backlash reel like the shakespeare one would be better for this prurpose.

Press the flipping switch. Bingo you're there.

Of course you do have to put on the proper line (in South Fla that would be 65 lbs braid) and tighten the drag so it has little give.

I did actually use this for flipping. I use 30 pound braid and a MH to H rod.
