I bought this reel as my entry reel into higher end fishing reels for my inshore fishing. At first I was very happy with the reel. But after several months of usage, I began to get many backlashes, no matter what type of line I used. During one of my fishing trips the side plate came off along with the braking system. Luckily I was still within my first year of ownership and the warranty covered the repair.

This reel is a great value for the money. I have used it on the coast to catch all species of inshore fish. Smooth casting!

Rated 5 out of 5 New favorite over my calcutta
Bought this reel for saltwater and for an extra bass reel. Performed better than expected. first trip it caught a limit of 20" specks multiple reds and flounder. Fished for a five days straight limiting on trout each day on the MS gulf coast. The braking system worked well when throwing DOA's under a popping cork into 10+ mph winds. I was able to take the brake off with ease and cast my skitter walk what seemed a mile. My buddy that thinks the only reel out there is a calcutta fished it for a little while and went and bought one the next day. While fishing a live trout tournament I caught a 65+ pound black drum. It would be the new state record, but I had 3 tournament trout alive in my 120qt ice chest and I just couldn't kill her. After an hour and a half of stripping drag we got her in the boat and put her on our scale which only reads to 65 lbs and she bottomed it out like it was nothing. I have a video of me using the reel and landing the fish it is just on a buddies phone. I also was using the abu veritas rod. So after non stop fishing for the month I was home from college, the reel far surpassed any other reel I have owned.

This is the first Abu Garcia reel I have purchased in over a decade. A friend of mine is a guide in Florida and is sponsored by Pure Fishing so most of his gear is Penn and Abu stuff. I used this reel loaded with 80lb braid for man handling snook around the docks and found it to be an incredible low-profile reel.
What impressed me most about this reel was how much abuse it took and still worked flawlessly. Unlike my regiment of rinsing with fresh water after every use and oiling a few times a season the Captain put this reel to use about 200 days a year and washed it once a week, no oiling.
This zero maintenance plan along with 15lbs of drag (even more if you literally hammer down the drag) sold me on this reel. I had been considering a Daiwa Inshore for several years but 9lbs of drag doesn't seem like enough to stop a charging snook, striper, or redfish when fishing near obstacles.
I spooled mine with 50lb braid and used it this past weekend to land some nice stripers in the current. The drag held up and the reel performed flawlessly. I couldn't believe how well it cast the chunky braid and I had no trouble casting an x-rap in windy conditions with no backlashes whatsoever.
I will be loading it with 30lb power pro next week to gain a little extra distance on the cast but I can honestly say I like this reel better than my Shimano Calcutta for inshore action.

This reel is very comparable. However, the main difference is that the saltwater series is constructed of a few different materials to help in protection from corrosion due to saltwater.1 of 1
