Rated 5 out of 5 by 6601 C4 I own several ambassadeur reels, all on ugly sticks. I use them for fresh and saltwater fishing. I can say that these reels will do anything and everything you want. I've reeled in LOADS of fish with my new 6601. Lots of specks and a few redfish. Can't wait to take it to the freshwater! The cast is so smoothe, it amazed me. I used it for the first time a week ago and didn't use another rod the entire day. A GREAT reel. I will definitely grab another next time I'm around BPS! July 26, 2006
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best Baitcaster I've Ever Used! The Abu Garcia C4 is the best reel I have ever used and I would recommend it to anyone. This is fastest retrieving reel I've ever used. It's Unbelieveable! July 24, 2006
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best got Better!!! The c4 reels always were the best but the new improvements ABU added this year make them even better!! I got mine last week and all I can say is WOW I now have a new favorite reel and I don't want to fish with anything else. Smooth reel. July 14, 2006
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWSOME REEL!!!! I got this abu garcia c4 6600 reel, and it is the best! I've fished with it many times already, and I have found my favorite baitcast reel, and it is this one. It is smooth, it has a fast 6.3:1 gear ratio, and it really cranks int the fish! Another plus is it doesnt get hardly any backlashes. I am sticking with this one and buying many more in the future. 65 # braid is about the size of 14 to 16 # test mono! You should be able to get between 220 to 230 yards of line on it! Size depends on the manufacturer of the line you will be using! Each brand differs a bit in size!

Hard to retrieve whit fish on!

Details:
I like this reel, it works well, but when I hook a fish, it's hard to bring the fish in! Could it be because of the gearing, or would a power handle help! When I retrieve lures, it works just perfect, but when I hook a fish it's hard to reel in! I fish for stripers, and mostly salt water! The spool doesn't rub anywhere, I check for for wear marks and found none!
Thank you for your time!

It sounds like the drag is set too loosely. When you reel in a lure there is little resistance pulling against the turning spool of line; with a fish on the resistance is greater and if the drag is too loose the reel handle turns but the line spool doesn't. The star drag on the reel handle should be adjusted. It shouldn't be so tight your line or rod breaks but not so loose you can't control the fish. I have a C4 and it is a very well made reel and will work wonderfully when set up right. Good luck! Some day I hope to fish in your beautiful country.

As long as you don't dunk it in water, you should clean, and lube it at least two times a season, but the more you use it, for example, every day, in salt water! You might want to clean and lube it four times a season! To take it apart and clean it, make sure to have the schismatics, and make sure to replace all the parts the same way they came on. But the most important thing to know is, do what you are comfortable doing! If it's only putting a drop of oil on the bearings, well that's OK. If you want to take it completely apart that's OK as well, just go with your comfort level! Use the oil and grease very sparingly, a little goes a long way! Go on you tube, you can watch videos on this and they are very informing!

Staff Answer
A:
Big Fish,

The cleaning and maintenance of any reel will keep the reel functioning at it's top level for years to come. That being said, the more that you clean the reel the better. Routine cleaning and oiling will keep the reel from corroding (if in saltwater) and will keep dirt and grime out. I would suggest sticking with the manufacturers recommendations on cleaning agents and instructions (these are included in the instruction manual). Also, if your reel needs a good overhall, our professional staff at our Outdoor World Rod and Reel repair should be able to help you out.

The braking system is the small dial just under the reel handle. It is easily adjustable, and as far as I know the only brake system on this reel. I have had other reels with internal and external braking, but this one does not have that, as far as I know.

I would like to re answer this question! The centrifugal brakes are situated on the same side as the handle! When you unscrew the three knurled bolts, and remove the side with the handle, on the spool, on the same side, are the brakes! Sorry for the misinformation!

If you look on the side with the handle, you will see three bolts with knurled heads. Unscrew them! That will release the other side cover, the pins for the centrifugal brakes are there! remember two always have them turned on or off in pairs, and also make sure that if you turn on a brake that the other one directly across from it must be turned on also! And the same goes when you turn them off as well! Hope this helps!

The knob buy the drag and handle. Adjust it to your lure size. Tighter with larger baits, more loose with lighter baits. Just play with it. You shout have it set so that if you shake the end of your rod you lure should fall a little bit with your bail closed.

I currently use low profile baitcasters with adjustable brakes. I also just use one rod/reel combo to do most of my bass fishing going from light 1/4 oz baits to 1/2 oz or more. Does this reel go from light baits to heavier ones or vice versa easily?

Answer this Question

A:
It is easy to adjust the brake system, however this reel is not made to throw very light baits. It is a heavy duty reel made to throw heavy baits. I would not recommend throwing anything under 1/2 ounce.

it adjust very easily just have to be careful cause its very sensitive, i use 1/4-7/8 spinners and jigs and it takes me 2 seconds to get her adjusted, backlash is hit and miss the usual dont cast into the wind and ive noticed it like the line to be kind of tight around the arbor unlike my black max and it prefers 12-14 lbs test i dont use braid cause i was getting lots of wind knots but i like my classic mono better anyways

I started with a C3 and spent alot of time learning not to backlash and how to tune it for different baits. I found low profile reels w/ magnetic and centifugal controls and they are easier to use. I got BPS Pro Qualifier baicasters and they are beautiful.I have a C4 and am learning again to adjust the reel for each bait and pay more attention to my technique. It handles 1/4 oz & up well, just practice. It's worth it. This reel will last many years and you won't "outgrow" it. I know I won't.

I would definitely go with a lowprofile reel if I had to have just one or for that matter no matter how many reels I would plan on using . Really the only thing I can think of where I might consider using a round reel would be for really heavy swimbaits . I use up to 7 in softswimbaits and the lowprofiles are plenty of reels for these . The best advise I could give is think Shimano . The Curado is a excellent reel for the price but is being replaced with a 4 bearing model this coming year so I would opt for the new Chronarch which is a last years Curado in a new paint job for the same price as the old one . I have 2 Cores and one Calais and 7 Curados and the Curados are really close to performance to the Cores and Calais and after a little super tuning just as good . I have 2 Revo stx's and I wouldn't recommend them because of bearing wear is too quick for me . The Bass Pro reels of the near past ( like the Gold and the signature series ) have been good to me also . But not as sure about the newer ones because they have changed to a cheaper die cast frame over the machined ones on my golds and signatures of old . I guess time will tell on the newer versions but as for me I will stay with Shimano Chronarchs if I have need of anymore new reels anytime soon. Anyway go low profile for bassin for sure . You wont be sorry . Good luck and tight lines .

These reel do not have a magnet cast control, so this reel isn't as easy as the low profile reel. I think it handles heavy lures great. If you're casting light 1/4 lures it takes some getting getting used to.

The Abu round reels don't cast light baits well. Anything under a 3/8th oz is tricky to cast.

I was stumped on what rod to pair with this reel. So I bought a twenty dollar Bass Pro Shops medium/heavy casting rod for a temporary pole. After fishing the pair for a while, I think I'm going to stick with it until somebody tells me why I shouldn't. It's a great pole for twenty bucks. Sturdy and sensitive. Definitely worth a look.

This is a scaled down reel with the spool as wide as the common thumb width. Therefore the line diameter which I found works best is 12# to 14# maximum for casting any type bait.
I fish for bass, redfish, and speckled trout here in Louisiana. These reels have a strong drag system and the drag brakes have lasted years from abusive redfish runs.
My reels are on 6 1/2' medium All Star rods and 7' medium lite All Star rods.
They will cast bass plugs, worms, top water baits from Pop-R's to large Zara Spooks with ease. You only have to adjust the spool tension for each bait weight.
I favor these reels and rods when I leave to go fishing the species mentioned.

There are a lot of variables involved. The most important things to keep in mind is personal preference, and the type of fish you are going after.

This reel should work best with a 6' to 6'6" rod in the medium to medium/heavy category. But that is my personal preference.

I have the extreme rod (7'6" heavy/fast retractable) paired with the 6500 . I use it for strippers . I've been very happy with this combo. With 17pound berkly XL these fish don't stand a chance. I use the balance weights and can cast this rod all day long.I really couldn't advise any other rods without more information about how you intend to use it. If you are still considering rods ask this ? again in more detail about how you intend to use it.I'll be watching for it and get back to you soon as I can. Later!

I would say the c3. You probably want more power for saltwater fishing and the c3s lower gear ratio provvides it with more power. As for durability, they are both very durable reels. You may already have found out, but I don't know if these reels are designed to be used in salt water.
