Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent product at great price Recently bought this reel and performs very well.I put it up against my buddies Penn's okumas and other reels in the same category and it outcasted the competition both with and without bait. One of my better purchases yet for the price. Rated 5 out of 5 by Great reel I bought 2 of these reels in San Antonio Texas for fishing salmon on Lake Ontario , Canada. Caught 2 salmon so far and the reel performed outstanding. When I was in the Bass Store the salesman was a big help explaining all the features. Thanks for the help! Happy Canadian. June 12, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Reel At first i was skeptical on buying this reel because it just came out and only had one review. I purchased it anyway thinking I was going to take a risk. Let me tell you this reel is great i was going to use it for top fishing and it does cast quite far after you adjust your settings, anyways we decided to do some rock fishing at first I was using my daiwa sg47lca with counter and I gave the abu a shot with my 15 pound izorline dropped it and man does it recover nice, fast, and smooth with 2 big fish on the lines. The level-wine and big handle make jobs so much easier too. Overall very happy with the purchase and i highly recommend this reel for this price range. March 27, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worth every penny No matter weather it's saltwater or big game fresh water these reels will do the job I bought 2 of the alphamar 16's and 2 of the alphamar 20's like I said worth every penny March 21, 2011

If I were to fish for a world record cat I would use something larger. Fishing for 20-30# would be right in the middle of this reels sweet spot.

This reel can handle any big cat. I think it is going to be the new standard for big cat reels.

I would try it. When catfish aren't biting try anything. They are usually attracted to stuff that stinks so why not. I didn't use this type of salmon eggs. But I remember using Balls of Fire, salmon eggs and I caught a 7 pound flat head. Just put like 3 on a 1/0 hook and see what bites. Good Luck

The ALPHMR12. I selected the midsize reel because I fish a number of fish and I wanted the versatility the 16 has.

There is a insert in the line guide that will handle braid without a problem. I am using 65 lb. braid without any wear at all.
