Rated 5 out of 5 by I would say this is the best Alphamar This reel is the best all around reel i use it for trout , salmon , bass , lingcod , steelhead , And what els would one use ? but the Alphamar that is all i have to say ! October 7, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by GREAT Reel! This is a great reel either for trolling or bottom fishing! I like a levelwind reel because I take a lot of friends fishing with me and don't like half-filling reels so that I don't have to try to explain how to wind the line on evenly and constantly having to watch to make sure it's done right. For bottom fishing for grouper and red snapper, I was able to load 500 yds of 65# Spiderwire braid on this reel, which is also QUITE adequate for trolling for Kings and Mahi-mahi and the occasional Wahoo in the Gulf where I fish. The drag is smooth and heavy enough for anything I've hooked to date on this reel. Try it: you'll like it! September 30, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ultimate Reel for Big Catfish!! I got one of these bad boys at the begining of the fishing season and I knew that it would be a good reel being that it is an Abu Garcia but I was literally blown away by this reel! . The reasons i love it is that it is super smooth, and thats the big thing that stood out to me when i used it for the first time, the second thing that stood out is how much drag there is 27lbs worth. Lets put it this way after I used it a couple times i knew I had to have another one so I sold some of my other fishing gear so i could have a second one. Simply put it's a killer deal of a price vs. perfomace ratio thats out of this world!! I use this reel for fishing for big flathead catfish so I need a reel that can take some abuse and can dish some out as well, these reels let me go toe to toe with big nasty flatheads and i dont have to worry about my reel giving up . Simply put it is a heck of a reel! September 7, 2011
Rated 3 out of 5 by Don't use a heavy sinker I got this reel as a gift and the looks are amazing. I put 100lb test moss green from Power Pro and put it on an Abu Garcia casting rod. All was ordered from Bass Pro Shop and the orders were complete and on time. First off you can cast with this reel. I ordered the smallest reel for this model and don't let the pictures fool you, it's not as big as you think. The break system is easy to set and casting takes some getting used to. The star drag system is strong as can be and when you reel in, it's smooth as it gets. The biggest fish caught on this reel was a 8 pound wiper. Not only was the fight not a challenge, but my wife was even able to lift the fish out of the water and the reel did not slip. Yes my wife caught the biggest fish that night. The reason why I rate this a three is because after 1 night of usage and more than a dozen adjustments on the break, it was still so hard to cast. I don't know if it was my rods small eye holes or if the reel just couldn't take the weight. But when this thing backlashes clear your day. It was so bad I had to pull all my line out and untangle it and then reel it back on. About on the 3rd worse backlash the reel froze up. It wouldn't retrieve come out it just locked. By the way I was using a 2oz sinker. After it broke the people at Bass Pro Shop were nice enough to give me my money back and offered if I wanted to exchange it for anything else. All in all I recommend this reel for people who don't use heavy weights. If you are thinking about buying this reel for cat fishing save some money and buy a snagging special from bass pro shop under fresh water reels. Buy if you want a reel for lighter baits this is the reel for you. September 2, 2011

If I were to fish for a world record cat I would use something larger. Fishing for 20-30# would be right in the middle of this reels sweet spot.

I would try it. When catfish aren't biting try anything. They are usually attracted to stuff that stinks so why not. I didn't use this type of salmon eggs. But I remember using Balls of Fire, salmon eggs and I caught a 7 pound flat head. Just put like 3 on a 1/0 hook and see what bites. Good Luck

The ALPHMR12. I selected the midsize reel because I fish a number of fish and I wanted the versatility the 16 has.

There is a insert in the line guide that will handle braid without a problem. I am using 65 lb. braid without any wear at all.
