Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 2 out of 5 by Great at first This reel was amazing the first couple of months. Then one cast about 20 yds of line came out and it locked up. After I fought to get the backlash out I noticed the spool would not spin freely when I put it in cast mode (sorry for lack of correct terms). I took the reel apart and found the gear had locked up on the the shaft after I removed it from the shaft I noticed a couple of burs that were causing it not to spin freely I smoothed those down and put it back together and it seems to work fine just holding in my hand, haven't taken back out yet so I don't know how it will work on a long cast. Rated 5 out of 5 by awsome store took a little to long on shipping would like alot faster September 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by silky smooth Smooth operation even with heavy line. Easy to use, retrieves exceptionally well. The drag is very trustworthy and handles heavy salmon as well as smaller rockfish. Took a 30+ pound stripper with ease. Loaded up with 20# mono and spool held 300 yds. no problem. Retrieve is strong, reliable and not too fast. This is without doubt the last reel I'll ever buy for local fishing. September 26, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by A step up from my 7000C4LD I bought the new Alphamar 12 to and paired it to a 3 piece travel rod so I always have a setup that's ready to go. I took it on a reef trip in Ft Lauderdale. I also bought it to see if the Alphamar line is good enough to replace my aging 7000C4LD. Even though the Alphamar is a star drag, I was attracted by its advertised 27lb drag. The Alphamar is a lot easier to flip from a boat side or cast than my C4. A freespool drop to the bottom is also quicker than my C4 but not as fast as my Abu Record. I took a peek inside and it appears to be just as easy to service and maintain as any other Abu Garcia. I bought this reel off the internet without having seen it it person. I'm probably going to buy the 20 to replace my 7000C4LD My only concern is what other reviewers have stated about it locking up. I'm keeping it lubed and I have my eye on it. Abu- if this is a known issue, address it now before I buy an Alphamar 20. If I spend more money only to find out there's a known defect, I'll lose confidence in your product and company. August 17, 2012

If I were to fish for a world record cat I would use something larger. Fishing for 20-30# would be right in the middle of this reels sweet spot.

I would try it. When catfish aren't biting try anything. They are usually attracted to stuff that stinks so why not. I didn't use this type of salmon eggs. But I remember using Balls of Fire, salmon eggs and I caught a 7 pound flat head. Just put like 3 on a 1/0 hook and see what bites. Good Luck

The ALPHMR12. I selected the midsize reel because I fish a number of fish and I wanted the versatility the 16 has.

There is a insert in the line guide that will handle braid without a problem. I am using 65 lb. braid without any wear at all.
