Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 23 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great downrigger reel This is the 2nd of these I have purchased and this is an excellent reel for light tackle downrigger rods on Lake Michigan. The 5:1 retrieve rate is perfect for this size fish and I have it spooled with 15 pound test mono. I have caught fish up to 25 pounds and the drag is very smooth even under a screaming run from large King Salmon. The level wind mechanism has also functioned perfectly. June 25, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good reel This is the best reel for large catfish, spooled with 150lb braided line with an 80lb leader and I'm ready to go! June 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Super gear I have purchased many reels in my lifetime and while I have used the ambassador reels for bass fishing I had never owned the larger ones for bigger game. I am pleased to say I wasn't disappointed with this purchase. My ambassador 7000 big game is now my new favorite weapon for landing spoonbill and large flat head catfish. I recently broke the 100 lb mark with my recent trophy spoonbill. The reel had plenty of back bone to land this catch of a lifetime and I would recommend it to anyone that needs a serious reel for serious fish. June 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by typical Abu Garcia- Great! I am using the 10,000I Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Big Game reel for surf fishing. Like all the other products from Abu Garcia, that I own, it is well engineered and works great. The spool tensioner is wonderfully adjustable and the star wheel drag is up to the task. Many surf casting fishermen use a reel without level wind but the 10,000I does a great job of distance casting with the ease of retrieval of a level wind reel. My friends kid me about the plain black reel color. I tell them that the color of the reel has nothing to do with catching fish, besides the reel is in "stealth mode". June 22, 2012

I enjoy fishing the surf for Reds, Speckled Trout and Shark on the Texas coast. I'm looking for a casting reel that will give me the most casting distance.

I personally use an 8 foot med heavy graphite rod coupled with an ambassador 6000 c when I am chasing bull reds in the gulf and have even landed a 9 foot hammerhead with this combo.

I would say if youre gonna surf cast you can use the Abu Garcia 7000iC3 it can handle 600+ yards of 30lbs braid. With an 8'6" casting rod and 3oz. of weight, I can get over a 110yard cast! Almost any baitcaster will do. But the Abu Garcia is all aluminum and stainless steel. no graphite that can twist and bind and especially no plastic. I have just started using this reel and the first weekend I got this reel I caught over 20 fluke, and 4 to 5 nice blues over 20 lbs and this reel is a WINCH! Pulled that fish like it was 2 lbs. And this reel has a centrifugal brake with minimizes backlash to almost non existent!

specs say 20lb. But I know if you tighten up the spool pressure button it should raise it up from that.

I prefer a 10-12 foot lamiglass rod with Fuji eyes and reel seat. However your rod choice may be vastly different depending on what you are fishing for. You will want a rod that is capable of handling 8 oz weight and up to 30 lb line.

On my current set up for boat fishing I have mine mated to a Shimano TRD Trolling rod with plenty of fighting power and have landed 30 lbs fish no issues. When fishing from the surf I use a 10'6" surf rod I forget the manufacturer and with 2oz weight for light surf I can get about a 350'+ cast!
