Rated 5 out of 5 by freshwater heavyweight I bought the 9000i about a month ago because I used my cousins 1000i and liked it better than my 6600 for snagging spoonbill . Man it really is a brute . I've had 7000's and 6500's in the past . They don't hold a candle to this 9000 for strength and durability . It casts really great too . I was always scepticle of these reels because they don't come with any brake system other than the main mechanical spool shaft brake . I have made well over 1000 casts with it so far and have not had a backlash yet . I have this reel paired with a uglystick bigwater boat rod ( 8' heavy ) using big game solar 50# test when boat casting and 30# test solar big game and a 12 foot snagging rod when casting off the dam for longer casting . This reel has met and surpassed all my expectations in every way imaginable . A diffinite 5 star reel . April 30, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by A good tru Abu, like many that have come before it. I am not sure about those two comments about these reels locking up and gears stripping, first of all to comment number one. To leave ANY mechanical devise to sit for a year and not clean and relubricate it is just neglegent, be it a fishing reel or be it a car it's bad news. If you do not look after your equiptment how can you expect it to look after you? For the second bad comment I believe that maintenance too is the issue here, remember guys these reels have been around for a few years now so even "brand new" out the box that oil and grease may be old and degraded. Being a fishing reel, the gears and other moving parts are subjected to extreme speed when casting and extreme torque when fighting "the big one" so the oil and grease NEEDS to be clean and fresh, any reel lets some form of moisture and grit into it over time. I have been fishing my big game 10000c now for 4 years and it has never let me down not once, I have caught everything from small catfish to a 210 kilo Bull shark with it and it is still one of my favourite reels. Rated 1 out of 5 by Broken right out of the box!! Purchased this reel last year brand new and never used it. Well today, 4/9/11, I finally took it to my local tackle shop to have it spooled for my girlfriend so we could do a little surf fishing in the morning. Well not even 5 yds into the winding of some new line the reel locked up!!! We pulled the end cover off and found the gear that drives the level wind stripped out. i cant believe this happened to a brand new and expensive Abu. I was looking to purchase a new Alphamar and Toro inshore reel for this years fishing season. Now my confidence in Abu Garcia is totally shattered. Guess my girlfriend will just have to watch me fish tomorrow:( April 9, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by 10000i a dream to use!! I purchased a 10000i to use for sea fishing for tope and sharks. I was not dissappointed the reel is a dream to use!! If your looking for strong reliable reel then don't look anywhere else just buy a 10000i!! April 6, 2011

I enjoy fishing the surf for Reds, Speckled Trout and Shark on the Texas coast. I'm looking for a casting reel that will give me the most casting distance.

I would say if youre gonna surf cast you can use the Abu Garcia 7000iC3 it can handle 600+ yards of 30lbs braid. With an 8'6" casting rod and 3oz. of weight, I can get over a 110yard cast! Almost any baitcaster will do. But the Abu Garcia is all aluminum and stainless steel. no graphite that can twist and bind and especially no plastic. I have just started using this reel and the first weekend I got this reel I caught over 20 fluke, and 4 to 5 nice blues over 20 lbs and this reel is a WINCH! Pulled that fish like it was 2 lbs. And this reel has a centrifugal brake with minimizes backlash to almost non existent!

specs say 20lb. But I know if you tighten up the spool pressure button it should raise it up from that.

On my current set up for boat fishing I have mine mated to a Shimano TRD Trolling rod with plenty of fighting power and have landed 30 lbs fish no issues. When fishing from the surf I use a 10'6" surf rod I forget the manufacturer and with 2oz weight for light surf I can get about a 350'+ cast!
