Rated 2 out of 5 by should have been great reel.... Start realy fine with this reel. After a day of casting on deck I stated feeling some dent on the line. Line been cut by the golden hole "liner" on the reel. I replace the line by new spider superline. Reel does not handle this type of line (realy hard to reel in). I reinstalled new 6 pound mono. casting is not an option any more. What Spincast reel are made for? ah! casting..... I use it for jigging or bottom bouncer. no expensive enought to send it back for refund. September 5, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Junk Just got this in the mail today. It is now in the trash. The retrieve slipped after the first cast. If you want a great underspin, get a Zebco February 24, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 the best purchase I made is this I am satisfied with the purchase I made the reel undersing 276Ui, thanks for your product or shipping and insurance correctly. Thanks Att.Sr. OCASIO. September 4, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by quality depletion I have owned several of these reels. the last two were not as good as the first ones. The last one had a squeak out of the box. The pickup pins are too short, trouble catching line and line falls off the spool. the last next to last one required the replacement of the pickup spool soon after because of grooving by the mono line. I have owned several of these reels over the past few years. I crappie fish with them and occasionally catch a catfish, bass, or large drum (up to the 5# range) but I would not recommend it for your purposes. I think their quality is deteriorating. the last two I purchased had problems out of the box.

You can use a spinning rod but I prefer an eight foot Crappie rod. (Bill Dance Quantum) the smaller line guides are better for pitching a jig or small bait.

Any light to medium weight straight pole. Because it is an under spin the pistol grip will not work.

Hi BobbyD -

I just reviewed the 276UI, and have 2 of these. One on an Ultra Light (Ugly Stik Lite 5' model) and LOVE it.

However, I think it would best be paired with a Medium-Light model. My other is on a 6' BPS Micro-Lite model.

But I''ve so enjoyed the feel of the Ugly Stik that I'm looking for their 5' 9" Medium-Light model (found at Gander Mountain).

To sum up: UL is okay, Light would be good, Medium-Light probably best. Your mileage may vary.

Retrieve rates are list as gear ratio. this one is 3.2 to one which is on the slow slide. 6 to 1 would be on the higher side.

Update to my last answer - according to the BPS catalog, the 276Ui has a 19" retrieve.

Definitely not in line with my own test using a tape measure and reeling in a weight one full turn of the handle, but ...

The ratio is 3.6:1, and by my measurements using a measuring tape and reeling in a weight, one revolution of the crank brought in 24".

This is obviously unscientific, but there you go.

A:
It is 3.6:1 but gear ratio does not mean much with this type of reel. A better gauge is how much line is retrieved per turn of the handle. For this one its 19". You could have a high gear ratio and a very small spool and it will seem as slow covered wagon.

You want a spinning rod since this is an under spin configuration (you want no "trigger" on the rod as in a spin cast rod). The weight and size of this reel is fairly big. Think medium action rods of 7 feet or so to balance well . This reel would be too heavy for an ultralight rod in my opinion.
