SO SIMPLE EVEN A BABY CAN CATCH FISH WITH THE ABU GARCIA SPINCAST REEL! I am an avid fisherwoman who had the great fortune of having a father who began taking me fishing at a very young age. I fell in love with fishing and cherished the precious time that we could spend together while fishing. I am committed to passing on that love of fishing to kids. I have a 3 year old great nephew, Cannon Levi, that I purchased the Abu Garcia Underspin Spin Cast reel for, as a Christmas present this past year. I wanted him to have a real rod and reel that he was able to operate and use himself. So, I selected the Abumatic 276i Underspin as his gift. He was beside himself with excitement! We finally had a warm enough day this past January to fish. I took Cannon to a local lake and showed him a couple of times how to operate and cast his new rod and reel. He was able "cast like a pro" and better yet....within minutes he had "FISH ON"! The picture of him catching his first Largemouth Bass is a picture of sheer joy on this 3 year old little boys face. Thanks Abu Garcia for making products that make passing on the love of fishing a breeze! So simple, even a baby can catch fish! But....more importantly....another great deposit in the fishing "memory bank". Pass it on....... February 2, 2011
Surprisingly smooth reel and great quality!!! Purchased this reel after reading other reviews and am now glad I did! Very easy to use and set-up and will cast soft plastics and smaller lures a mile! I have it paired with a 6ft. Abu Conolon Premier spinning rod and this combination is a killer! I also like that it came pre-spooled with Trilene XL and would recommend highly! December 17, 2009
Durable Abu Although this reel is a little heavier and bulkier than I like, It performs flawlessly. It appears to be xtremely durable and has proven so. It is smooth to crank with no wobble in the handle at all. I have used mono and braid both on mine with no problems. The drag performs better than some spinning reels I have used that cost 3 times the price of this reel. If you like the underspin style reels and need a reel for heavier duty fishing applications(bass, catfish, etc.) look no further. October 28, 2008
Lost and Found Last year while fishing in a high mountain lake with my Diawa spinning reel, I felt that I had snagged the bootm. But aas I was pulling my line started going in really weird directions. My mind raced but as the leader broke the service I found myself the pround new ower of a underspin Abu Garcia reel.and fishing rod. I took the reel and rod home did a major cleaning of the reel and have been using it ever since in the same lake I found it, with absolutely no problems with it. What a find in both the reel and something that was so simple to clean, re-line and use over and over with no problems. February 2, 2011

I have owned several of these reels over the past few years. I crappie fish with them and occasionally catch a catfish, bass, or large drum (up to the 5# range) but I would not recommend it for your purposes. I think their quality is deteriorating. the last two I purchased had problems out of the box.

You can use a spinning rod but I prefer an eight foot Crappie rod. (Bill Dance Quantum) the smaller line guides are better for pitching a jig or small bait.

Any light to medium weight straight pole. Because it is an under spin the pistol grip will not work.

Hi BobbyD -

I just reviewed the 276UI, and have 2 of these. One on an Ultra Light (Ugly Stik Lite 5' model) and LOVE it.

However, I think it would best be paired with a Medium-Light model. My other is on a 6' BPS Micro-Lite model.

But I''ve so enjoyed the feel of the Ugly Stik that I'm looking for their 5' 9" Medium-Light model (found at Gander Mountain).

To sum up: UL is okay, Light would be good, Medium-Light probably best. Your mileage may vary.

Retrieve rates are list as gear ratio. this one is 3.2 to one which is on the slow slide. 6 to 1 would be on the higher side.

Update to my last answer - according to the BPS catalog, the 276Ui has a 19" retrieve.

Definitely not in line with my own test using a tape measure and reeling in a weight one full turn of the handle, but ...

The ratio is 3.6:1, and by my measurements using a measuring tape and reeling in a weight, one revolution of the crank brought in 24".

This is obviously unscientific, but there you go.

A:
It is 3.6:1 but gear ratio does not mean much with this type of reel. A better gauge is how much line is retrieved per turn of the handle. For this one its 19". You could have a high gear ratio and a very small spool and it will seem as slow covered wagon.

You want a spinning rod since this is an under spin configuration (you want no "trigger" on the rod as in a spin cast rod). The weight and size of this reel is fairly big. Think medium action rods of 7 feet or so to balance well . This reel would be too heavy for an ultralight rod in my opinion.
