On a normal cast and retrieve they will run approximately 2 to 2.5' below surface. If you do count down and let the lure sink for say 5 seconds the lure on a long cast and steady retrieve will climb back to the 2 to 2.5' depth.
They don't really "dive" some sink and some float. Rat-L-Trap makes floating models. The weight of the lure causes it to sink faster usually you can count it down for the depth you want to fish at. The longer you wait to start the retrieve the deeper the lure will go until it hits the bottom. I have used the BPS Rattle shads with good results as well as Bill Lewis Rat-l-Trap's. Hope this answered your question.
