this reel sounds like its a great reel but would a Bass Pro Shops Power Plus Trophy Class 7' Medium Heavy Trigger Rod work well with the smallest reel size for this model?

Details: 
i bought this reel last friday. i went fishing today to try it out and the longest cast i got was about 60-70 feet...i know it will cast farther than that....this is my first baitcasting reel and im not sure whether i am setting it right or not...please tell me if there is something wrong so i can return it if there is....

You just got the reel, it takes time to get used to the settings...you aren't getting distance out of it because the brake was probably too hard, but I'm sure if you loosen it you'll get a birds nest immediately. Just take your time.

These reels are not designed for long casting. The noise may be the clicker set in on position (small button on left side of reel that moves up and down) You can loosen the spool tention with the small round knob on right side of reel behind drag star. This will produce free spooling, loosen it very much and your line will freespool and tangle.

I would spool it with braid with a mono backer. Put on a swivel with a Palomar knot and attach your harness, spoon or whatever you are using with at least 3' of fluorocarbon leader.
