I just take the tip of the grease tube put a little dab on the part I want to lube, and then spread it around with a fine brush. You can use a toothpick or a a cue tip if you like, but I find that a fine brush does the trick for me!You can find these brushes at any art supply store. Also depending on the part you want to lube, will determine the method used.

I don't think salt water should be able to get to the gears in your reel in the first place, if so, there is a leak that should be pluged! But this grease should protect your gears as long as they are covered in a thin coating of grease! What I do on my reels, I put a few drops of oil, on the shaft that holds the spool, with the spool off and give it a light coating, that helps stop the water from getting! Also, after each outing in salt water, I rince off my reels, rods, lures with fresh water, helps prolong the life of your equipment!
