With most handheld VHF FM radios you usually get a 4 to 5 nautical mile range. Accurately computing radio horizon you have to factor in the height of the antenna above the earth (water), frequency, wattage, effective radiated power and other important factors. Generally the less obstruction the better, and the higher you're antenna is elevated will help achieve maximum distance. Remember these radios are meant for inland/inshore communications or as a backup to more powerful and efficient mounted units. Thank you and come see us at Bass Pro Shops Orlando!
