Noob help

Details:
I purchased a few of these for the next trip out of glouscter. We will be fishing for mostly cod....My question is mostly presentation. Do you jig it hard or do you work it lightly? Also we will be fishing in 200 ft +....Do you let it down slowly and work it all the way down???

A:
For cod, I would let it drop to the bottom and jig it near bottom unless you know there are fish higher up. On any given day, the fish may prefer a vigorous or a subtle jigging action. Vary the action until a pattern emerges.

Details:
I hook this jig from the tail and at least 50% of the times once it reaches bottom and I start retreiving the hooks tangle (hook) on the line making the jig swim horizontally and thus not working properly having to wind all the way back up with a heavy (drag) load. Any recommendations on how to hook and how to let this jig sink especially in deeper waters 80-120 ft?

A:
These jigs are designed to have hooks attached to the head, butterfly style. They will tangle less and also snag bottom less. Many if not most fish hit the head end most often, so I would suggest getting rid of the tail hook.

Tie to the split ring on top.
We drop a lot deeper than that with no problem.

Hi fishing colombia,
Tie it in the same ring the hooks are on between the two hooks if tandom. They will not tangle like this, the hooks will fall down the line and off as you work it upon the first two or three jerks.

A:
How are you rigging your jig. Are you using an oval solid ring which makes the asist hooks spread apart on both sides of the jig followed by a split ring for the jig. Usuall it is better to have the heavy part of the jig leadind the drop.

A:
The jig should be tied to the same ring as the assist hooks are attached to. I use the 5 and 7 oz with 18" of 80# florcarbon leader and do not have the problem you describe although I've fished the lure to 300'. I do not let the lure hit the bottom.

Make your line connection at the end with the hooks not the other end.

A:
Jig is not designed to be attached from tail -- always attach from head via the split ring with assist hooks.
