To me it seems that I have to turn the tension knob very much for my lure to start dropping slowly. It is not like my shimano curado in which I can adjust the spool tension pretty easy. If you have this reel model can you tell me if this is normal.

I have to step on the brakes a bit harder on my Ford truck than I do my Dodge.lolMaybe it is a trait of the different manufactures. Could be one brand of reel has more surface area on the spool shaft end, or different friction material, maybe one reel has a courser adjustment than the other.
Whatever the case, adjust your STX as 'you' need it to be, to get the performance 'you' require from the reel, there is no 'set in stone' parameter for the spool tension adjustment, and the guidline offered in the owners manual is just that, a guidline!
You may have to vary your spool tension as conditions and or lure weight changes.
I have reels set to allow the lure to drop 'slowly' with the rod held at about a 45 degree angle and thumbbar pushed, and other of my reels are set to allow the lure to fall unrestricted, yet others you'll have to 'giggle' the rod tip to get the lure to drop.
Whatever it takes for the conditions!

How do I adjust the tension knob? After I free the spool the weight of my lure makes to spool rotate very fast, I have tried turning the tension knob but the spool keeps rotating very fast. They only way I can make the spool decrease speed is by turning the tension knob all the way in. Is this normal?? It is much easier to control the spool with my curado. this is my first revo btw.Answers

You may need to have your reel serviced, not sure. If you haven't done this first:Tie on a bait or practice plug. Tighten the spool tension knob until the bait does not drop. Loosen the tension knob until the bait drops to the ground slowly-to-mid-speed, and when the bait hits the ground the spool stops turning without starting to backlash.
This is the proper spool tension. If this does not work for you, I think you reel needs servicing.

If you have the knob tightened completely it should drop at a very slow rate if at all (which is dependant really on the weight of the lure). You may want to remove the side plate and observe that each of the centrifugal pins are engaged as this would help slow it down.Details:

IT SOUNDS LIKE A FLAT BEARING RETURN THIS REEL TO ABU GARCIAA:
I notice a little grinding also but did not cause any problems. If reel is working I would not worry about it.

There could be many possibilities for the reel to have a grinding feeling when reeling in. Since Abu Garcia does warranty their reels for one year from the date of purchase, it may be best to see what Abu Garcia may think. Working on the reel yourself or having a non-licensed repair service work on the reel may void the warranty. I wouldn't recommend any Abu Garcia rods other than the Abu Villian which has yet to come out. But the Bass Pro Bionic Blade is very nice for the price and is very light.A:

Tough question. A lot depends on how much you are willing to spend. I'd have to say Shimano is "the best" of the brands you've mentioned. but for the price I think Bass Pro makes great reels. I'm not a fan of Abu at all, and have never owned a Browning so can't comment on them. Shimano reels are, in my opinion, the best reel for the money at each price point. You can spend anything from $75 to $400+ and at each level I think Shimano is the best. Plus, they will last two lifetimes. At the very high end, Daiwa also makes great reels (comparable to Shimano high-end but a toss up as to which is "better"), but you've got to be willing to lay out $500+. Hope this helps.A:

I have all of the above and all perform very well. Browning makes bass pro reels. I wouldn't limit yourself to just one brand becasue they all have different advantages. The only problems that I have had is with abu garcia rods braking...reels are sweet. Check out the carbon lite rods...the best for your money.A:

I've been an ABU man for a long time. From the original 4600's to the REVO series, they perform better than any of the reels mentioned. If your gonna stick with one brand, go with ABU!

Worth it for sure. Match it with a Veritas rod. Awesome. Better than the sx because of size, and weight, and unbelievable casting ability.

I own both and I think the Revo is one star better. The revo has 9 Ball Bearings an the Orra has 8 ball bearings. The Revo S has 24 lbs of drag for rippin some lip and the Orra only has 15. There you go.Details:
I'd like to use this reel for light swimbaits (up to about 1.1/4 oz), crankbaits as well as soft swimbaits (like hollow body swimbaits and soft magic swimmer). Does it seeem adapted for this use ? What rod could I fit with it (around 50$) ?Thanks and cath a big one !

I have 3 Revo S reels, Love them never a moments problem. I have one a Browning Medallion GT rod 6' med. Spool with 10lb flourocarbon and you have a great set up for what you what to throw.

It performs well with all. It's a solid reel with 24 lbs of drag power and very smooth. I have a berkley shock series rod, 7 MH, and it's made for braid but handles any line great...it also has a Strike Amplifying Tip (S.A.T), which has a little extra give to not pull hooks out of the fish's mouths. It has plenty of backbone and pretty lightweight.Details:

Its the knob just below the handle if you turn it counterclockwise it loosens it and clockwise tightens it.A:
Tighten it up until the bait will not drop. Begin to loosen it until the bait drops to the floor and the reel stops (no over spin) Do this with every bait you throw (all different weights)A:
loosen the torsion bar that runs right behind ur levelwind. once its lose turn the reel onto its side and pull of the sideplate. when u see ur pins on the brake the way they sit is turned off. each one u push out puts a little more presure onto the spool just remember if u turn one on the pin on the opposite side has to be pushed or pulled to match it or the reel will be out of balanceA:
there are six brake pucks under the side cover. For each one that you click up is a brake shoe that will apply on casting.the more brakes shoes that are applied will slow the spool down faster but will shorten casting distance. my recomendations are to apply the three brakes not marked pitching which is every other one,plus apply one of the pitching brakes for a total of four.keep the drag knob fairly tight so the lure bairly creeps down when you push the trigger or tight enough that it doesn't move at all this should help minimize backlashes.

It is easy as pie once you get used to it. You unscrew the SILVER screw on the top of your reel. Once that is done you twist the left side of the body UP and then gently pull the plate off. After removing the plate you use your thumbnail to pop the "orange" pins up. You need to keep them balanced so that your reel will not wear in an odd pattern. Do not pop them off, nor do you wedge them up. Make sure they slide a little bit, and freely. If you are new to casting this kind of reel pop out 4 brakes in an X pattern and you should be good to go.Lunchbox

What you want to do is if your casting heavier baits like lipless cranks or spinnerbaits set only two of the pins across from each other to the on position if you want to throw some weightless plastics like a senko set 4 of the pins to the on position but they always have to be set parallel to each other not in a row.Answers

I have 3 of the Revo S models on gloomis rods. I fish aprox 100 days a year, I've has these reels for about 2 yrs and they have never let me down. As with any reel keep them clean and greased for optimum performanceA:
I haven't owned a kenetic but i have owned most of abus low-pro reels and have friends that have had quantums. The kenetic is a good all around reel and from what i see it has no major drawbacks. The abu I would say will perform for you day in and day out over a period of years not seasons as long as you keep it clean and maintained. so either would be a great reel what it boils down to is what you like better. I recommend finding the rod you're going to put it on and slap each reel on it to see which feels better in your hands. Most bass pros will let you do this.Details:

I dont think you can really say there is a best. I really like the abu garcia revo reels. I plan on added a toro or winch for crankbaits for big smallies and muskies next spring. For reels, get something good that will last. It's cheaper than buying junk every two years. For rods, Don't get anything too stiff or you'll end up ripping the treble hooks out of the fishes mouth.. St. Croix makes several good rods at various prices and quality.A:
I have my Revo S on a BPS Cranking Stick light/medium action rod. I also have BPS Exreme, Bionoc Blade, & Pro Qualifier medium action rods with Abu Garcia round reels. They all work fine with crank baits.
