I noticed you can achieve a shallower retrieve with the boogee, it will leave a nice wake as you retrieve at a slower pace than the chatter bait. I found this retrieve to produce more strikes!
The best way that I have found to rig a boogie bait is to tie directly to the bait on 10 to 12 pound test with either spinning or casting gear with a 5:1 or 6:2 ratio it is best used swimming slow
I have always used the palomar knot tied directly to the lure although the fish-n-fool knot is supposed to be as good or better and requires a little less line. Both work well with any type of line and both can be looked up on the interenet to learn how to tie. I do not feel that tied directly to the lure interferes with the action as it is, by it's design, somewhat an aggressive action.
Yes! Actually when you buy the boogie bait it comes with 2 yum boogie tails...Other trailers work also...as well as other colors...I bought enough boogie baits in every color each with different color combo of trailers..
I can say that I have fished this bait with the included boogee trailers as well as without, I find it an effective bait regardless. I have also experimented with great success using chunk trailers as well as cutting either end off of a Yum Gonzo creature bait. The possibilities are endless.
I frequently use the boogie bait without the trailer and catch just as many large smallmouth as I do with the trailer. My favorite and the fishes favorite is the Alpine with a 4 inch cajun trailer
I have found that without the trailer the bait will run deeper (and catch fish). Conversely, shallower with the trailer (and catch fish). Experimentation with a different trailer could prove effective as long as it doesn't interfere with the baits designed action.
