Why does the leader have to be so heavy when the main line is 12 or 14# test?

A: 
The leader is a much heavier test line due to the muskies that are targeted with this leader having very sharp teeth. The main line needs to be at a lower test rating to help get your deep diving crankbaits and lures down to the muskies depths (as larger test lines have larger diameters and will cause the lure to ride higher in the water).
