The simple design allows you to quickly attach these rod holders to your boat or dock making it easier to fish with multiple rods. Constructed from PVC-coated die-cast aluminum, these portable rod holders are corrosion resistant and fully adjustable. The standard size rod holder fits up to 1-5/8’’ diameter rods, the deluxe mounts up to 2-5/8’’ diameter rods and the clamp on fits up to 2-1/4'' and 3-1/4'' diameter rods.

It clamps better in the back but not on the side where the surface isn't flat.
Even in the back it wasn't sturdy enough.

Probably - not sure - I believe it is the power of the motor that loosens up the screwing on mechanisms - I am going to mount the next ones to the side of the boat as we like to troll for Lakers and Salmon and these just come loose to fast.

They will work on a jon boat , and you don't have to drill holes. And you can move them around your boat with easily until you find "just the spot" they seem to work the best.
