I know what you're experiencing. I live in Louisiana and have no tools for planting. I have tried throw and grow from Whitetail Institute with little success. I would suggest you try ShotPlot from Evolved Harvest. and prior to throwing it on the ground mix it with Delta Ags Seed Coat. You can get them both at Bass Pro. (Delta Ag is a Miss. Co.)

Doesn't grow as fast as the Shot Plot seeds but that's good for a winter food source. Mine started to come up in about 11 days.

Manufacturer says one week in common conditions. They give the following recommendations to give yourself the best chances for this timeline.
Eliminate grass in clearing by weed eating, mowing or spraying (if spraying, allow one week before seeding). Note: plants require minimum of four hours of sunlight per day.
Rake area thoroughly to remove grass and debris.
Broadcast Secret Spot.
Re-rake area lightly.
Seed will germinate within one week (with rainfall).
Note: For best results, add 50 lbs. of 13-13-13 fertilizer (or equivalent) and 100 to 200 lbs. of ag lime before seeding.
