I have used both, the threaded is just that the post base screws into the plate. I am currently using the king pin type this held in the base by compression and just pulls out when you want to remove it. Both work well, screw in will last longer, but has added cost on all items.A:

The threaded base plate is for seat posts that are threaded at the bottom and the regular base plate is for seat posts that are just the plain pin style.Details:

If you can stand on the center of the hatch cover without it bowing or flexing and the hatch isn't to large, then you may be able to install one on it.My Tracker boat came with one of these installed on the fiberglass rear storage compartment lid and it is holding up fine. My hatch lid is about an inch thick, but it is also 3 feet wide and 2 feet long. The smaller the hatch size the better. See if you can install a piece of 3/4" marine plywood (a little smaller than the lid) to the bottom of the hatch lid to add strength.
One other note, the bottom of the tube has no bottom on it, so water can run through it and down into the storage area.

I wanted to move back from the front of the boat I mounted this on a piece of 3/4 marine plywood and fitted it between the seats in the bow. works just fineA:

What size hole do you drill to insert the pedestal base? 1" or is it larger to fit the splines?

Because of how well this is built (very heavy duty) the hole I had to cut was 2 1/4"A:
i did a 2 1/4 because the base plate has a angeled bottom,and used silicon under it between it
