I have used a 12V 55lb thrust troller on my 16 foot pontoon.

However, if you have wind or current to contend with, you are going to want to go with a 24V unit of at least 80 lbs thrust.

The 80 lb thrust won't give you twice the speed, but it will give you enough thrust, even with passengers, to handle windy conditions.

If you are pushing more than 21 feet of boat, you may need even larger. A pontoon catches a LOT of wind.

You will want to measure your boat when it is fully loaded with gear and people for a regular day of fishing. Measure from intended mounting location (transom or bow) to the waterline of the loaded boat. Then add 18 inches. That's the shaft length you are looking for.

A:
Measure from the water to top of your deck, add at least 12" or more. Remember, the motor mount can raise the power head up 4" or more.

Bow mount trolling motors tend to need a longer shaft than the standard 30" to 36". For a bow mount, I'd go at least 42" shaft.

Transom mount, at the back, are more forgiving on shaft length. A 36" shaft would fit most small to medium fishing boats.

Remember, the prop needs to be about 10" to 12" below the surface. If you have some guys in the back of the boat, it can raise the bow six inches or more.

the motor has nothing to do with the speed, it is the rheostat switch, check for loose/broken wires.
