Don't be confused by any imitation, Lodge Dutch Ovens are the cast iron cookware that set the standards. Lodge's closely held metallurgy and strict quality standards are what garnered this a "Best Buy" by Cook's Illustrated magazine. Like all Lodge Dutch ovens, this five quart cooker come complete with a cast iron lid featuring the raised Lodge logo. The original slow cooker, versions of this very cast iron oven have been a kitchen staple in American homes for more than two centuries. This cooker measures 10-1/4'' across and 4'' deep. Wire bail with spiral handle for easy carrying. Seasoned cast iron construction means pan is ready to use right out of the box. Made in USA.

Introducing Lodge Logic™: Ready-to-use cast-iron cookware, pre-seasoned for consistent performance!

For more than 100 years, Lodge has been perfecting the process of making cast-iron cookware, formulating the perfect metal chemistry to create durable cookware with incredible heat retention and distribution. In the past, the seasoning process was never complete until someone cooked countless batches of fried chicken, catfish and cornbread in the pan or pot to burnish it to a black patina, creating a piece of cookware that could be handed down like an heirloom. Lodge Logic removes the waiting, thanks to a newly-developed seasoning process. Lodge's electrostatic spray system applies a proprietary vegetable oil combination to deeply penetrate the pores of the iron. The result? Seasoned cast-iron cookware from Lodge you can use it right out of the box.

A:
Yes, but your success may depend on the what you are cooking and how far above the fire you hang it. Most of my recepies, which you can find on line, have you place the camp fire coals under and on top of the lid. type in camping dutch oven cooking online and you will have a lot of great sites to help you out. In hanging it above a fire, I would be careful on the shap of the handle. If it is not notched, it may easily slide to one side or the other, dumping your meal.

Because of the handle it might not be able to hang on a tripod. However, if you can get it to fit then yes it will cook and hang over a campfire. Happy Cooking!

Details:
From the picture, it appears as though the top would be unable to hold hot coals. Dutch Ovens I've used in the past all have a lip around the edge to hold hot coals.

On this model you would not be able to put coals on the lid. . You're right. Look for about a half inch lip.

A:
You are right, it would be difficult to balance coals on this oven's lid other than in the center. Lodge calls the ovens with the lipped edge "Camp" ovens for that reason. This would be more of a home oven, but you could probably use it with coals if you fiddle with it.
