1/2" hot-rolled bar stock will hold a couple hundred pounds, and this is made with 3, so it will hold more than you will ever hang from the chain at any one time.

I am not sure about a limit, but I have suspended a full pot of chili in a 8 qt cast iron which had to equal 35 pounds.
