It depends what you are screwing into. For mine in an aluminum boat, self tapping screws worked great, but if there is room under the mounting area, i suggest using a small bolt and nut mainly because it is more secure after miles of boating and trailering. What ever you are drilling into, be sure to use stainless steel or brass to provent corrosion.
