The Shimano Tekota Levelwind Reels are solid, technically advanced, palmable levelwind reels designed to keep you trolling comfortably for years. Built on a rugged 1-piece die-cast aluminum frame with aluminum and graphite side-plates for maximum strength and minimum weight, the Tekota Levelwind Reels featurea unique crossbar-forward design that provides direct access to the spool, a non-disengaging levelwind system with underbrace for better line management, oversized clicker, and a non-slip Septon™ ergonomic power handle. Inside, the smooth-meshing 4-bearing system incorporates 3 specially machined A-RB™ corrosion-resistant ball bearings, plus a one-way roller bearing associated with the Super Stopper® anti-reverse system.

Line counter models feature a built-in line counter that tells you exactly how much line is out (in feet) allowing you to make more precise presentations. Models 500 and 600 are equipped with counter-balanced handles for wobble-free retrieves; Models 700 and 800 have adjustable handles.

Line recovery in inchers per handle turn.

I think the tekotas don't have a thumb bar which would make it the opposite of good for learning to cast. I found the Abu Garcia C3 and C4 very easy to cast. The Shimano calcutta B is as well. Need the thumb bar for easier casting. That said, the tekota is a very nice casting reel and the linecounter models are superb trolling reels. I own a couple.

I recommend you grab a Penn Jigmaster(cheap and reliable) and learn on that before grabbing this reel. If you can cast a jiggy you can cast anything imo. Perfect your thumbing technique and learn how to get rid of birdnests, cuz no matter how fancy the reel, you WILL get birdnests from time to time. All in all, this daiwa is a great reel and well worth the money.

when putting line on winding in a fish your true level wind like the shimano tekota keeps the line straight and not at an angle. you can get more line on this type of reel. my drag works better.
