I usually fish this around cover but I've also been successful in open water when the fish are running bait. I let it sink to the desired depth, usually near the bottom, and hop it back to the boat/bank. Let the fish determine the speed that you work the bait. Sometimes I'll just drag it along the bottom at a slow pace. The skirt on a jig gives it plenty of action even at super slow speeds. So, you can work this bait very slow or fast. This is an extremely versatile bait in my opinion.
This may seem unusual, but I pair mine up (both the 3/16 and 5/16oz) with a 4.2 in Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. It's a big trailer for such a small jig....but, it works for me! I like the large profile of the sweet beaver and the baby boo gives the bait a nice action with the skirt. You may have some trouble with dink bass ripping the legs off, but the big ones suck it down. If the water has more visibility and the fish seem skittish, I'll switch trailers and go with the smaller beaver.
A smaller lure like the Tiny Paca Chunk would be a more conventional trailer to use for this jig. Sweet finesse presentation when paired with this trailer. Real compact jig.
PS Bass Pro Shop makes the EXACT same beaver lure as Reaction Innovations and it costs a little less.
