Trick is to bounce it off of structure, or dig into the substrate to help trigger strikes. Easy technique that will help keep you from getting hung up is to stop reeling once you hit something. This causes the lure to float up and typically away from the stump, limb, rock, etc. Get a lot of strikes on the stop and especially once you begin cranking again.
For me, there is no wrong or right way to fish this. First make sure the depth is correct for this lure. If it is, I fish methodically and experiment with my retrieve. Fan cast this bait and use a fast retrieve. No bites? Do it again but with long or short pulls, reel in the slack line and pull again. (I find bass will hit this retrieve on the pause when the lure stops and starts to float up backwards) If this fails, try a slow retrieve like the ones above. If still haven't been brutely bashed by a bass, you may have to change colors or your depth. Patience my friend...when it comes together, it will be worth the experiment, enjoy!
which color looks most like threadfin shad? which color would you recomand for california lunker bass? I have a 7 foot pole and 10 pound test line will i get a good cast?
First off use a 7 foot or 7 foot plus rod with a medium action with 12 lb fluorocarbon for longer casts, deeper running depth for your crankbait and more sensitivity, but ten pound test will work. Sexy shad and green gizzard shad are about the best colors to imitate shad of any kind. Sexy Shad works about anywhere you throw it, I don't have shad down here in Miami and they jump ALL over it, in fact i caught 5 on it yesterday on submerged grass beds.
